Introduction • Hi. Rad. Mat is a unique facility for high-intensity high-energy single pulse experiments • 440 Ge. V/c beam, up to 288 bunches of 1. 2 E 11 p/bunch • 23 experiments completed, 1 ongoing and 2 approved for 2017 • High prompt radiation in the experimental zone and in the neighbouring tunnels • Harsh environment for electronics / instrumentation • Careful choice of the equipment to be used and the position to be placed in the EA • The validation of FLUKA simulations with measurements is of critical importance in order to evaluate radiation levels as a function of target thickness and number of protons on target Rad. Mons + Batmons installed and measurements taken during 2015 and 2016 beam periods 14/12/2021 N. Charitonidis & R. Alia-Garcia - Hi. Rad. Mat Shielding 4

Comments related to measurement analysis • In most cases, measurement uncertainty is dominated by low count statistics • Therefore, when less than 10 SEUs are accumulated in the 5 V Rad. Mon, the analysis focuses on the 2 -sigma upper limit for the HEH fluence • The analysis of the 2016 runs is currently ongoing, with a focus on the April experiment 14/12/2021 N. Charitonidis & R. Summary – Next steps • The FLUKA simulations of the facility’s model have been validated with RADMON/BATMON measurements A satisfactory agreement has been found between the FLUKA simulations & the measurements, bound to uncertainties in the positions of the monitors & the large fluctuations of the dose close to the shielding • The new shielding configuration will be implemented in FLUKA and the new measurements (taken in 2016) will be compared with the simulations. The FLUKA model of the facility can be trusted in order to assess the radiation levels for future experiments along with the permanent RADMON installations. 14/12/2021 N. Charitonidis & R.
