HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey Comments 2007 – 2008 School Year 1. What are the strengths of distance Learning? We are able to provide classes that would not fill at one site and we can offer super ___________________________________ electives with motivated teachers and students. ______________________________________________________________________ DL gives us the ability to offer varied classes that budgets might not allow otherwise ___________________________________ and offers the experiences of varied student populations. ______________________________________________________________________ I like being able to meet different students via the network and expose my host ___________________________________ students to academic challenge. ______________________________________________________________________ We are able to teach classes with a special interest or to fulfill unique needs. Allows ___________________________________ interaction between students with like interests from different schools. ______________________________________________________________________ We have a wonderful relationship with our remote school. It is a pleasure to work ___________________________________ with the aide there, she is an extraordinary professional. Great access to technology, ___________________________________ teleconferences, student interaction with other schools. ______________________________________________________________________ It offers the opportunity for students to interact with a broader base of peers. Also ___________________________________ many of the courses offered (by myself and others at my home school) would likely ___________________________________ not run due to low enrollment, were the class not offered through the DL Network. ______________________________________________________________________ BOCES Distance Learning Program . . HFM SAN Distance Learning Project Teacher Survey Comments 2007 – 2008 School Year 2. What are the weaknesses of Distance Learning? Lack of out of class time communication with students, difficult to make up missed ___________________________________ class time, the administration at the school level is not fully supportive of school visits ___________________________________ and field trips. ______________________________________________________________________ Difficult to meet students after school for make-up, re-teaching, etc. is very difficult ___________________________________ to arrange for receiving schools. I try to make an effort to ___________________________________ visit the receiving schools in person (so far I’ve visited Mayfield and Fort Edward) and ___________________________________ its always surprising how different everyone is. ______________________________________________________________________ Not getting to meet all students in person, not knowing information about remote ___________________________________ students or school policies that I would know from my local school, frequent ___________________________________ shortened schedules, assemblies, snow days, snow delays, etc. , that mean remote ___________________________________ students miss class. ______________________________________________________________________ BOCES Distance Learning Program . .
