LINEAGE • The parents of the Hesperides are not clear. Some say: • Nyx alone gave birth to them • Nyx and Erebos • Atlas and Hesperis • Hesperos • Zeus and Themis • Phorkys and Keto

WHO WERE THE HESPERIDES? • The Hesperides were the goddess-nymphs of evening and the golden light of sunsets. They were responsible of taking care of a garden in the western end of the world, near the Atlas mountains in Africa. They were also the keepers of other treasures of the gods. Such as the weapons given to Perseus by the gods.

THE GARDEN OF HESPERIDES • The Hesperides were entrusted with the care of the tree of the golden apples which was had been presented to the goddess Hera by Gaia (the Earth) on her wedding day. • They were assisted by a hundred-headed guardian name Ladon(Dragon).

THE GOLDEN APPLE OF DISCORD • On Olympus, home of the gods, Zeus planned a wedding feast for the sea nymph, Thetis, and her husband, the mortal Peleus. Zeus invited all the gods and goddesses but one, Eris. This is because wherever Eris, the goddess of discord and only brought misery. • She snuck into the great hall and flung a golden apple into the crowd. The apple was inscribed with the word kallisti, meaning "for the fairest. "

WHO IS THE FAIREST? • Every goddess rushed to claim the fruit. Soon they were fighting for the apple but at the end only three goddesses remained: Aphrodite, Athena, and Hera • They asked Zeus to decide who was the fairest. He knew he could not pick so he got Paris of Troy to come pick. You need to decide Zeus. Paris will decide

TROJAN WAR • Hera offered to make him King of all of Europe • Athena offered him wisdom and to make him the finest warrior in all the land • Aphrodite offered to make Helen of Sparta fall in love with him • Paris picked Aphrodite’s offer because he wanted to marry Helen. This choice lead to the Trojan War.

THE 11 TH LABOR OF HERCULES • Eurystheus commanded Hercules to bring him golden apples which belonged to Zeus, king of the gods. Eurystheus believed Hercules would never accomplish the task. • These apples were kept in a garden at the northern edge of the world, and they were guarded not only by a hundred-headed dragon, named Ladon, but also by the Hesperides, nymphs

WHERE IS THE GARDEN? • Hercules' first problem was that he didn't know where the garden was. He journeyed through Libya, Egypt, Arabia, and Asia, having adventures along the way. • Finally Hercules came to the rock on Mount Caucasus where Prometheus was chained. Prometheus, a trickster who made fun of the gods and stole the secret of fire from them, was sentenced by Zeus to a horrible fate. He was bound to the mountain, and every day a monstrous eagle came and ate his liver, pecking away at Prometheus' tortured body. • After the eagle flew off, Prometheus' liver grew back, and the next day he had to endure the eagle's painful visit all over again. This went on for 30 years, until Hercules showed up and killed the eagle.

ATLAS • Prometheus told him that Atlas would now where to find the Hesperides, because they were his daughters. • Atlas hated holding up the sky, so he agreed to go get the apples. Hercules had to take on this burden while Atlas went to get the apples

HERCULES’S QUICK THINKING • When Atlas returned, he decided that he would give the apples to Euryetheus himself. • Hercules slyly agreed and asked Hercules to take the burden, so he could put some soft-padding on his shoulder. • When Atlas did this Hercules took the bag of apples and ran away.
