HERO’S JOURNEY: MULAN

1. THE ORDINARY WORLD • This is when we see Mulan at home, in her village, and visiting the Matchmaker • She is going about her “normal” life; she is completing chores and working to fulfill societal/cultural obligations (trying to get a “match” to bring her family honor) • This is also where we separation: Mulan is different from the other girls in her community & she struggles to fit into her parents’ & society’s ideas of an ideal young lady – She is running late – She is unsuccessful with the Matchmaker

2. CALL TO ADVENTURE • A messenger delivers the news that a man from every family must fight to protect China from the Hun army. • Mulan’s father must go fight. • Mulan realizes that something must be done in order to prevent her father from going to war. • Mulan comes up with the idea that she can go to

3. REFUSE OR ACCEPT THE CALL • Mulan accepts her call • This is where we see sacrifice: – She risks hurting her reputation (sacrifices reputation) – She puts her life on the life to save her family (sacrifices safety) – She cuts her hair • We also begin to see a transformation here – External transformation (cutting hair; putting on her father’s uniform)

4. CROSSING THE THRESHOLD/THRESHOLD GUARDIANS • Mulan leaving her parents’ home and crossing through the gates to go to war • Threshold Guardians: –Her family –Society

5. MEETING THE MENTOR • Mulan arrives to the outskirts of camp and begins contemplating how she will go about entering camp and pulling off her disguise • Mushu arrives & provides Mulan with advice • He guides her through the camp • He saves her at the bathing pool

6. TESTS, ALLIES, ENEMIES • Shane begins to test the soldiers in training (“I’ll Make a Man Out of You” • Mulan doesn’t get along with the other soldiers at first, but they eventually become friends (allies) • We begin to get more information on Shan Yu & he is establish as the clear antagonist (villain/enemy) • Mulan passes a huge training test by collecting the metal on top of the post • We continue to see external transformation – Mulan is getting more in shape and ready for battle • We see internal transformation – Mulan’s determination builds – She gains friends & leaves isolation

7. APPROACH TO THE INMOST CAVE • Shane’s troops begin to march to war • “A Girl Worth Fighting For” scene • The troops discover the village that was attacked by the Hun army & realize that Shane’s father’s army has been killed • The tension picks up • The decide to go through the Tung Shao pass to make it to the Imperial City on time

8. THE ORDEAL • The battle in the Tung Shao Pass • Shane’s troops are outnumbers by the vast Hun army – Life or Death • Mulan (Ping) takes the cannon & causes the avalanche • The troops almost die in the

THE ORDEAL, CONT. • Mulan’s female identity is discovered • She realizes Shan Yu and some of his goons survived • She goes to the Imperial City alone to warn the others – She risks her life going to the city • Mulan stops Shan Yu & saves China – The fight is life or death • Mulan has internal development by doing the right thing

9. REWARD, SEIZING THE SWORD • The Emperor rewards Mulan with the sword of Shan Yu and the Emperor’s Crest • He gives her credit for saving all of China

10. THE ROAD BACK MULAN RETURNS HOME WITH THE REWARDS & HAS A SAVIOR

11. RESURRECTION • Mulan meets with her father • We see her father’s love for her • She is in good graces with her family • He tells her the greatest honor of all is having her for a daughter

12. RETURN WITH THE ELIXIR • This would also count for when Mulan meets with her father & presents him with the sword of Shan Yu and the medal of the Emperor • Shane appears and shows romantic
