Hero’s Building Self-Confidence
Self-Confidence � 1. What is YOUR definition of self-confidence? � *It is believing in yourself, and in your abilities. � *When you trust yourself to do what’s right for you, not what other people want you to do. � 2. How does self-confidence, (or the lack thereof), affect our behavior? � *Some people will not try things because they are afraid. � *People with self-confidence are not afraid to try new things or take risks. � *People without self-confidence are afraid to fail and be embarrassed. � 3. What happens to your self-confidence if you “bite off more than you can chew”? � *You can’t change your whole life at once! � *It lowers because you become overwhelmed! You end up not changing anything because you get discouraged with one task and can’t handle changing the rest. � *When you succeed at several small things, it gives you courage to go on. You have a foundation to build on. (Practice makes perfect!)
Self-Confidence � 4. Is self-confidence something you are born with? If not, how do you increase your self-confidence? �*No-By taking chances and risks and by achieving something you can look back on and say, I did that! Or at least you tried! �*Self-confidence comes from what we do, what we accomplish, especially as we grow up and take charge of our own lives! (Requires actions!!) � 5. Does setting short-term goals help build self- confidence? How? �*Yes- Because when you have accomplished something you set out to attain, it becomes a little bit easier to face the next challenge-you gain more confidence as you reach and obtain your goals along the way � 6. How do negative messages affect our self-confidence? �*It makes it very hard to build and maintain our self-confidence. Negative messages tear us down and make us feel inadequate or not good enough.
Self-Confidence � 7. How do positive messages affect our self-confidence? �*Positive messages help build and maintain our selfconfidence. It boosts our self-confidence and makes us want to continue to try new things and take risks. � 8. What do YOU do when someone puts you down? Do you agree that you have a choice in deciding what kinds of messages you accept? � 9. What can you do when you start putting yourself down or when you start using negative self-talk? � 10. How does accepting ourselves, (flaws and all), affect our self-confidence? �*Guess what…Nobody else is as concerned about how we look as we are! �*By giving ourselves positive messages, we build our selfconfidence. �*by giving ourselves negative messages, we tear down our self-confidence. � 11. How do we “practice” giving ourselves positive messages? List one positive message that you could give

What are some tips that we can use to build self- confidence? �-Self-confidence comes from how we feel about ourselves, not how we look. �-Remember, we build our self-confidence through our accomplishments �-Everyone has things about how they look that they don’t like. �-Start Small �-Build successes step by step �-Don’t expect to start at the top �-Lay a foundation to build on �-choose friends who help build self-confidence �-Stop giving ourselves negative messages (start giving ourselves positive messages instead) �-Ignore put-downs �-Take risks and try new things
Hero’s and Role Models �Hero: person admired for bravery, great deeds, or noble qualities or a person admired for contributions to a particular field �(Ex: George Washington is a hero for our country) �Role Model: person whose patterns of behavior influence another’s attitudes and actions �(Ex: Parents are important role models for children)
