Heroes by Robert Cormier LO: To explore real life accounts of service in the armed forces. ST: I can compare and contrast sources.
Starter: read the news article ‘Amazing story of WW 2 hero who went beyond the call of duty to rescue Prisoners of War’. Summarise the article in no more than 25 words [write in full sentences].
Task: Now read the second article by Ryan Sheppard • Summarise the article in no more than 25 words [write in full sentences].
Comparing writers’ ideas and perspectives. Focus Source A – Amazing Story… Writer’s description of military Quote: combat. Writer’s feelings/thoughts about their experience. Source B – Ryan Sheppard’s account Quote: What it tells us:
Task: Using your table of ideas answer the following questions. • Compare the opinion expressed about military combat in both sources. • You need to think about how each writer has chosen to convey their view about military combat. – How does the writer structure the writing to achieve this? – What language does the writer choose to achieve this ? – How does the tone of the writing reflect this?
Think about the similarities and differences between the views expressed by both authors of source A and source B. • Write 2 comparative paragraphs. In both sources the writers describe military combat and the feelings they had whilst serving their countries. In source A, Lee Trimble retells his father’s story of serving in WWII and how his father was self-less and undertook the ‘most dangerous mission of all’. By using the superlative ‘most’ and adjective ‘dangerous’ suggests that Trimble’s ideas about military combat were perilous, risky and unsafe. Whilst in source B, Ryan Sheppard retells a first hand account of how he thought he was going to die in a ‘vivid attack’ in Afghanistan. This verb reinforces Sheppard’s view that combat was aggressive and hostile during his military service. Firstly, Trimble’s experience of combat was one of …. Likewise, Sheppard’s experience of military combat was … both writers suggest … Sheppard’s attitude to combat was…he says … this supports his view of … On the other hand Trimble’s attitude was … his son states …
