Tidbits about the Explorer Mr. Hernando was supported by Spain and on his little expedition he explored Florida and the southeastern U. S. Ø By the way, he went to South America also. Ø FUN FACT!- Hernando was the first European explorer to explore Florida.
Amazing Transportation! (voyage) Ø Ø Hernando had 5 large voyages and 4 mini ones. Greedy de Soto decided that he wanted power and money because he didn’t have enough, ( as a young man he made a fortune in the Central American slave trade { emphasis on “greedy”} ) He decided to travel to Florida and conquer it and eventually take the Spanish crown. Again GREEDY. Ø Unfortunate Fun Fact - Hernando died soon after his first voyage, poor guy he was only 46, (he’s still greedy though).
War and Disease OH NO! Ø While on his search for more riches, Mr. de Soto spread war and disease throughout what is now Alabama, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas. Ø By the way, he colonized parts of the U. S. So he achieved his goal of his voyage.
Early Life Little is known, but we will add a few things. Ø Hernando came from minor nobility in Spain. Ø By the age of 14 he had already made it into Panama, Central America. Also around 1519 he was known as a fierce fighter and a skilled horseman. Ø
DEATH Ø Hernando de Soto died at the age of 46. Either he was killed by his battle wounds or he got a bad fever. Ø The survivors of his disease- bringing expedition fled to Mexico. Ø
Interesting & AMAZING Facts If you go to the banks of the Mississippi you are standing on our favorite dead man! Ø He was once governor of Cuba Ø
Things We Learned! We learned that the people of Spain were big on colonizing the United States. Ø We found the information on Hernando interesting enough. However, we did find this one guy who went on a expedition-like thing with Hernando. His name was Francisco Pizarro. Ø We were SURPRISED to learn that Hernando was greedy. To find out more go to slide 3. Ø We had never heard or seen this information before. Ø
Importance Ø We think that Hernando de Soto was kind of important, but he wasn’t Christopher Columbus important. Ø We think this because he colonized Florida and was the governor of Cuba, but he didn’t really do anything significant.
