Grain What are grains? • Any food made from wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is a grain product • Grains are divided into two subgroups: • Whole grains • Refined grains HOME
Grain What are whole grains? • Whole grains contain the entire grain kernel– the bran, germ, and endosperm • Types of whole grain products: • Whole-wheat flour • Bulgur (cracked wheat) • Oatmeal • Whole cornmeal • Brown rice HOME
Grain What are refined grains? • Refined grains have been milled, which is a process that removes bran and germ • Most refined grains are enriched with vitamin B and iron • Types of refined grain products: • White flour • White bread • White rice HOME
