Thomas Becket • 21 December 1119 Cheapside, London -29 December 1170 Canterbury Cathedral • Archbishop of Cantebury since 1162 • venerated as a saint and martyr by both the Catholic Church and the Anglican Communion • Murdered in his cathedral
The conflict between the church and Henry II • Henry II gave land to Norman bishops (close ties with church) • Henry hoped that Thomas would help him • Becket didn’t • Henry shouted out: „Will not someone rid me of this turbulent priest? ”
Richard the Lionheart • Son of Henry II • very brave and noble king, but he did not spend a lot of time in England - only six months of his eleven year reign were spent in his country • cruel and violent against Jews in England • died after being shot with a crossbow during a siege on a castle • his remains were buried at different places • His body -Fontevraud Abbey near Saumur in France, as his father’s and mother’s • his internal organs were buried at Chalus, France • heart was buried in the Notre Dame Cathedral at Rouen
