Dog Show
June 28 -29, 1859 was the date of the first officially recognized dog show of the modern era, which took place in England.
In America, the oldest and most famous dog show is The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show.
In the 1870 s, The Westminster Kennel Club was started by a group of men who frequently met at the Westminster Hotel in New York and who were interested in dogs.
The Westminster Dog Kennel Competition was started in 1877, and is America’s second oldest sporting event. The Kentucky Derby is the oldest!
Let’s put this into perspective… Since the Westminster Kennel Club held its first dog show 141 years ago: v 26 presidents have been elected. v 12 states joined the Union. * v Electricity and automobiles were invented! * Washington didn’t become a state until 12 years after the first Westminster dog show!
In a dog show, judges evaluate each dog’s: • • • Proportions Size and weight Eyes: color, size, shape Ears: shape, length, position Head: shape Muzzle: shape, length Whiskers: thickness Teeth: kind of bite Tail: how it arches and sets Shoulders: bone, muscle A judge will use his hands to inspect the dog's body, including its bones and muscles. • Legs: muscles, stance, proportionality • Coat: texture, length • Color: accepted breed colors t
In addition to assessing physical characteristics, judges assess the dog's walk (gait) and attitude. t
Dogs are invited to compete based on strict entry requirements, including how many other dogs they've defeated in breed competitions.
Non-invited dogs can also compete if they have won a certain number of major dog show awards.
In total, there are seven different dog groups. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. Sporting Hound Working Terrier Toy Non-Sporting Herding
In the Westminster Dog Show, each breed group has one winner.
Best in Show is a coveted award given to one dog at the end of each dog show. This TOP DOG is awarded “Best of all Breeds” out of all of the dogs entered in the competition.
The Terrier breed has won “Best of Show” 45 times! t
The Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever are the most popular breeds in the United States, but have never won the Westminster Dog Show. t
The oldest dog to win Westminster was Stump, a Sussex Spaniel that was 10 years old. The youngest to win was a Rough Collie named Laund Loyalty of Bellhaven, a 9 -month-old puppy.
This year, a female German shepherd named Rumor won the Best in Show award at the 141 st Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
Each Group Winner is awarded an engraved polished pewter trophy. The Best in Show Winner receives an engraved polished pewter gallery bowl.
What do you think a dog would want for a dog show prize?
Chapter 5 – The Pale Pink Dog It all began when Henry and Ribsy made their weekly trip to the Lucky Dog Pet Shop to buy horse meat. "Well, if it isn't Henry and Ribs!" exclaimed Mr. Pennycuff. "Do you have your entry blank for the dog show? " "What dog show? " asked Henry. "Didn't you hear? The park department is having a dog show in the park next Saturday. Boys and girls up to sixteen years old may enter their dogs. The Woofies Dog Food Company is giving prizes. Better take an entry blank and fill it out. A fine dog like Ribsy is sure to win a prize. " Ribsy wagged his tail. "Well, " said Henry doubtfully, "he's an awfully good dog but he isn't any special kind. I mean he isn't a cocker or bulldog or anything. " "That doesn't matter in this show. Now you just take this blank and fill it out. See, here's a place for dogs of mixed breed like Ribs. " "Gee, thanks, " said Henry. "I think I will. "
