Henry Bacon, American painter, was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, in 1839. During the American Civil War, he enlisted in the Union army in 1861 and served as an “artist field”, that is, an artist who depicts some aspects of war through his art, which are often absent in written accounts of warfare. Severely wounded at Bull Run, he was discharged in December 1862. After the war, he perfected his techniques of watercolor using oblique angles and cutting effects. He popularized the scenes perspective on the deck of passenger ships, which he observed during his travels. In 1864, Bacon went to Paris with his first wife Elizabeth Lord, to study painting; he was one of the first Americans to be admitted to the “École des Beaux-Arts”. Around 1891, he married Louisa Lee Andrews, his second wife. His work was exhibited in Paris Salons and in the "National Academy of Design" in New York. Bacon died in Cairo, Egypt on March 13, 1912.
