Henri Rousseau
Just some Tid. Bits…. ● Henri Rousseau was alive from 1844 - 1910 ● He LOOOOVED to play the violin and to draw as a child but his family went bankrupt (ran out of money) and he could no longer go to school. He had to find a job as a teenager to help his family. ● He is known as a “Self-Trained Artist” because he taught himself everything he knew rather than going to art school like most others. ● He moved to Paris as an adult ● He worked many jobs before really focusing on painting
The Jungle Works of Henri Rousseau • Some of his most famous work • He never actually went to the jungle – instead he studied exotic plants in greenhouses, images in books, and taxidermied animals. • Often he depicted animals in jungles. • His work was a source of inspiration for the movie “Madagascar”.
FOCAL POINT A focal point is an object that the artist gives special importance to in a piece of artwork. They might use size, placement, or contrast to make this object stand out and draw the viewer’s eye.
Your Project You will be creating a drawing (maybe a painting) inspired by Henri Rousseau’s jungle paintings. You will select an animal you might find in a jungle that will become the FOCAL POINT ( object that is given special importance in a piece of artwork) in your artwork. To complete this project, you will: 1. Choose an animal you would like to draw. Look at images online or in books to study what this animal looks like. 2. Using LIGHT pressure, draw your animal surrounded with jungle type surroundings. You can look at images of jungle plants to get inspiration here! you will do this on the watercolor paper I sent home with you. The bigger, thicker paper of the two I sent home. 3. Go over your lines with a black sharpie or black colored pencil. Don’t use a black regular marker to do this as the black marker will smudge. 4. if you have paint, feel free to paint your project. If you do not, you can color it using colored pencils or crayons or even markers. If you use colored pencils, I challenge you to blend your colors by layering colored pencils to get more interesting colors! 5. When you finish, if you are able to take a picture and email it to me so I can see it, I would be VERRRRRYYYYYY excited!
