Run Coordination LHC : • • Restarted std 25 ns intensity ramp up after special runs (Oct 20 th) 8 b 4 e run with 500 bunches(~2 h run): • Different injection scheme, more favorable for getting less electron cloud and lower emittances. Initial pile-up in this fill around 23 (compared to ~15 in typical 2015 fills). “Electron cloud was essentially zero” (M. Lamont) Several tests done/planned while CMS in 0 T Recent fill with 2041 bunches (CMS at 0 T) Delivered the longest fill ever: >~24 h with 275 pb-1 • CMS had ~92% efficiency, profited in performing commissioning tasks that needed to be done during this fill with some impact on efficiency Latest fill just dumped: 2244 bunches lasting since yesterday night, delivered 148 pb -1, CMS advanced necessary tests. BCMS tests scheduled later in the week Main causes of downtime: • TK DCS problem (~5/pb) • Trigger: tests of stage-1 HI board, stage-2 (~8 pb-1) • Pixel: tests of HI firmware (~10 pb-1) Kerstin Borras, WGM 244, 28 th October 2015 6

LHC Heavy ion • The Heavy ion period has been confirmed and negotiations have converged to extend the Proton operation of the Injectors to allow the setting up of the HI optics with protons. • The proton reference run at 5. 02 Te. V is now to take place at the beginning of the HI period after TS 3 Tiziano Camporesi - WGM 245 Okt 14. 13

2015 data (I) • While the data taking efficiency is very satisfactory we have had several problems which affect the quality of the data. • HCAL has had problems which have affected the quality of the HF data – Due to a fault in one cable the data from one of the HF was meaningless: the DQM code did not warn about such occurrences and the fault was detected after ~accumulating ~50 pb-1 of data – An issue (whose source is being investigated) can lead to a problem at configuration time which can corrupt the pipeline linked to a 20 degree wedge of HF. Mitigating actions are in place while hunting for the source of the problem. The issue affects ~390 pb-1 – As we are planning next year to run all of HCAL with new electronics we need to make sure that adequate resources (manpower and not only) are foreseen to maintain and monitor properly the system ( plans for 2016 : action for next MB) • Accelerated aging of the HE scintillators seems to be confirmed with the first data Tiziano Camporesi - WGM 245 Okt 14. 14

2015 data (II) • Aging of devices like Turbines can hit us almost anytime

2015 data (II) • Aging of devices like Turbines can hit us almost anytime and affect the quality of the data of any detector (had one fill where 1 DT sector was not usable) • We also see rare occurrences of issue related to FW of the new devices (e. g. the AMC 13) • We should reconsider seriously the approach to analysis which we have had until now, namely that data is used for analysis only if the JSON flags are golden everywhere: analysis should be able to cope with data of varying efficiencies Tiziano Camporesi - WGM 245 Okt 14. 15

EPR : a change of culture • The final recommendation from the EPR working group is now posted in the agenda of the CB (link) • The original paradigm of assigning EPR to tasks which are essential for getting good quality data on disk for the present detector will imply a change of culture with respect to present practices (was not respected since the very start of CMS) • There will be a lot of discussions during the CMS week ( a Q&A session is foreseen for the CB chat slot on Monday) Tiziano Camporesi - WGM 245 Okt 14. 27

Status of EPR 2015 EPR due in 2015 per signing author: 4 months tasks

Status of EPR 2015 EPR due in 2015 per signing author: 4 months tasks + 0. 5 months shifts new authors: 6 months tasks (can include shifts) EPR 2015 status on 12. 10. 2015: Total Needs: 10, 550. 80 ~ 5. 2 months per author ! Total Pledged: 10, 178. 91 ~ 5 months per author Approved Work: 2, 140. 59 (23%) Shifts: 771. 37 (77%) Total number of EPR authors: 2, 039 ( increase 1, 931 at the end of 2014) Looks much better than in previous years 47% of the institutes have pledged >=100% of their due Caveat: some tasks & some colleagues are over-pledged (>~12 months !) Very unfortunate: crucial operational tasks like in PPD, Trigger Coordination are seriously under-pledged delays in certification etc …. 53% of the institutes have pledged < 100% of their due please check and adjust your pledge to fulfill the due for your institute Observation: many under-performing institutes improved after having received in February a notification from the management about their 2014 performance. Remaining institutes will be reminded individually (9% pledged <60% of EPR due). Kerstin Borras, WGM 244, 28 th October 2015 28

Preparation for EPR 2016 EPR Review Group: • Chair: Florencia Canelli Members: D. Barney, P. Rumerio, R. Tenchini, B. Wyslouch ex-officio: CBC -Team, SP-Team (represented by K. Borras) • Assessed the present situation and future with received individual comments and with surveys to team-leaders and to L 1/L 2 managers Recommendation: EPR per author should not to exceed 3 months incl. shifts • Clear sign from the surveys 3 months by restricting to core activities: Operation of CMS and getting good data on tape • Full report (to be approved) is on the 105 th CB indico agenda: https: //indico. cern. ch/event/452918/ • Please send comments and questions to the EPR Review Group: cms-epr@cern. ch • FAQ document in preparation: will be linked to the indico agendas • Open Q&A Session: Monday, after Plenary, 18: 00 in Council Chamber: https: //indico. cern. ch/event/453807/ Kerstin Borras, WGM 244, 28 th October 2015 29

Proposal on how to move forward Proposal Approved by the CB We propose to decide in December on the overall EPR system for 2016. (1) The EPR review group agrees to develop recommendations on how to deal with the “non-core EPR” part in the overall EPR-2016 system, and we will discuss them in the December CMS week (2) Meanwhile, managers will develop the task list of the “core EPR” part following the guidelines from the EPR review group; this task list, which will be accessible in an improved EPR tool, is agreed to be the minimum that will be open for pledges in the EPR-2016 system Kerstin Borras, WGM 244, 28 th October 2015 30
