I CAN… …reread my short story through the lens of the claim, gathering and organizing evidence that will support the 3 reasons. …bring the evidence I gathered from the story, into my essay,
CONNECTION Last week, we were busy gathering evidence from our short stories, and organizing it according to the three supporting reasons for our claim. Please take out your ”Gathering Evidence” worksheet. Turn and Talk: o Why did I choose these specific examples from the text? o How do they support my claim and 3 reasons?
TEACHING POINT • Today I want to teach you how to bring the evidence you gathered last week, from the story into your essay.
TEACHING v. Storytelling is when you story-tell the evidence, using your own words and you weave those words with quoted text blurbs, to recreate the portion of the story. v. Let’s take a look at our claim about Squeaky and the first supporting reason: v. Squeaky is a fiercely protective character because she watches out for Raymond’s safety. v. Now, lets look at the next slide, where I used storytelling to convey the text evidence that will support this idea.
TEACHING For example, she keeps him safe when they go for strolls. One day, when Squeaky and Raymond are on a walk down Broadway, a busy street in New York City, Squeaky makes sure to keep Raymond “walking on the inside close to the buildings” since “he’s subject to fits of fantasy” causing him to “dash across traffic. ”
ACTIVE ENGAGEMENT Open your writer’s notebook to the next clean page in the Literary Essay section. Take a close look at the second supporting reason for our claim about Squeaky. Using specific evidence from the text and the storytelling technique, write a few sentences conveying that evidence. v. If you need help finding text evidence, you can use one of the sticky notes from the chart.
LINK v. Now it’s time for you to practice this storytelling technique with your own story. v. Look at your Boxes and Bullets Plan and focus on: v. Body Paragraph 1: v. Reason A: In your notebook, write the first body paragraph using all that you know about paragraph writing and the storytelling technique for conveying evidence.
