Life before Troy • • • Heinrich Schliemann was born in Germany in 1822 in the family of a priest. His mother died when he was 9 years old and because of the poverty he couldn't receive good university education. In his youth he changed a lot of jobs and at the age of 22 was sent as a sales representative to St. Petersburg. During the gold rush in the USA he opened a bank there, speculated on stock markets and returned to Russia during the Crimean War in a position of a military contractor. He earned a great fortune enough to retire and dedicate the second part of his life to the discovery of Troy.
The turning point • In 1869 he met Sofia – a 16 year old Greek girl who became his “Helen”, a life -time friend and supporter. • In the same year he got acquainted with a British archeologist Frank Calvert who helped him during all his excavations.
Discovery of Troy • In 1871 his first excavation in Hissarlik on the territory of modern Turkey began. • In the year of 1874 the location of Troy was found followed by 3 more excavations later. • In 1890 Heinrich Schliemann died and was buried in Athens.

Striking facts • Before Schliemann Troy was a legendary city and professional scientists didn't believe in its existence. • He spent almost all his considerable fortune on the excavations of Troy. • By the end of his life Schliemann could speak English, French, Dutch, Spanish, Portuguese, Swedish, Polish, Italian, Greek, Latin, Russian, Arabic and Turkish. All these languages he studied himself.
