Dialectic Reality is Dialectical p Thesis Antithesis Synthesis p Contradictions are only apparent results of incomplete consciousness. p The Real is Rational and the Rational is Real. p
Intentionality The distinction between subject and object between inside and outside breaks down. p Sense Certainty-I see a this a particular, but it must be speakable to be something so it becomes a thing with properties. p Perceptual Consciousness. The properties are presented to me as part of a thing that exists outside of me and which holds these properties together. p
The Absolute and The Idea (Notion) Reality is self-conscious reality or Idea. p It expresses itself historically in the growing self-awareness of ideas in their determinate expressions. p The Absolute is completely self-conscious being as the end of this historical process. p
Art p Art aims at truth: the correspondence of the Idea or Notion with its objectification in sensuous appearance.
Three Levels of Art Symbolic: Idea less than realization p Classical: Idea equals realization p Romantic: Idea surpasses realization p
Symbolic The Idea is merely abstract and incomplete. The thing does not express it in all its individuality but merely stands as a symbol for it. p The Pyramid is a symbol of power or truth. p Architecture is the type of art that best fits this level. p
Classical The Idea matches its objectification exactly. p Spirit can match a particular only in the Human Body taken as an exemplification of the perfection of Spirit. p Classical Sculpture is the form of art that matches this level. p
Romantic The Idea surpasses the objectification. p The Idea here becomes Infinite Spirit or the absolute so the only fit expression of this is Spirit itself, so the medium becomes not the physical thing, but the movements in spirit that the thing occasions. p There are three types of art for this level: p Painting, Music, Poetry p
Three Levels of Romantic Art Painting. The medium is already free of space in that it squeezes 3 dimensions into two and can picture anything. p Music: The medium (time) is always in motion and moving. p Poetry: The Medium is thought itself and only accidentally the thoughts or symbols that produce it. p
