Preview: Hebrews 2: 5 -18 • Hebrews 2: 5 -8 – Jesus is the son of man (who died for us) • Hebrews 2: 9 -13 – Jesus is our brother (who died for us) • Hebrews 2: 14 -18 – Jesus conquered death (for us) as a man, not an angel
5 It Hebrews 2: 5 -8 (NIV 84) – Jesus is the son of man (who died for us) is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6 But there is a place where someone has testified: 6 b “What is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 7 You made him a little lower than the angels; you crowned him with glory and honor 8 and put everything under his feet. ” [Psalm 8: 4 -6] 8 b In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. • Jesus is ruling the heavens and the earth: As a man, because He died as a man.
Psalm 8: Hebrews 2: 6 b-8 (NIV 84) – Son of Man = Jesus or us? 6 b “What is man [Jesus or us] that you are mindful of him [Jesus or us], the son of man [Jesus or us] that you care for him [Jesus or us]? 7 You made him [Jesus or us] a little lower than the angels; you crowned him [Jesus or us] with glory and honor 8 and put everything under his [Jesus or our] feet. ”
1 Corinthians 15: 26 -27 a (NIV 84) 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. 27 a For he “has put everything under his feet. ” [Ps. 8: 6] “Christ the Lord is risen today” by Charles Wesley Verse 3: Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia! Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia! Once he died our souls to save, Alleluia! Where's thy victory, boasting grave? Alleluia!
Objection: How do we see Jesus ruling? Hebrews 2: 8 b-9 a (NIV 84) 8 b In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death…
Hebrews 2: 9 -13 (NIV 84) – Jesus is our brother (who died for us) … 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12 He says, “I will declare your name to my brothers; in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises. ” [Psalm 22: 22] 13 And again, “I will put my trust in him. ” [Isaiah 8: 17] And again he says, “Here am I, and the children God has given me. ” [Isaiah 8: 17] • Jesus is united to mankind: As a family, by dying for us.
Psalm 22: • Jesus quoted Psalm 22: 1 a from the cross: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? ” (Matt. 27: 4, Mark 15: 34 = Psalm 22: 1). • Matthew and John both quote Psalm 22: 18 about Jesus’ crucifixion: “They divide my garments among them and cast lots for my clothing. ” (Matt. 27: 35, John 19: 24 = Psalm 22: 18). • Psalm 22 starts with God abandoning the Messiah: “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? … I cry out by day, but you do not answer. ” (Psalm 22: 1 -2). • Psalm 22 ends with God rescuing the Messiah: “He has not despised or disdained the suffering of the afflicted one; he has not hidden his face from him but has listened to his cry for help. ” (Psalm 22: 24). • Hebrews 2: 12 quotes from Psalm 22: 22 about the results of Jesus’ death: “I will declare your name to my brothers; in the congregation I will praise you. ”
Isaiah 8: • Isaiah 1 -12: “Judgement and Hope for Jerusalem” by destroying the “old Jerusalem” and creating a “new Jerusalem” with a “new king” who will rule “all nations” by “God’s Spirit”. –Isaiah 8: 17 -18: We must trust the child/the stone, who will call us His children. • Hebrews 2 highlights two things about Jesus from Isaiah 8: – 1. We are to put our trust in Jesus. – 2. Jesus calls us members of His own family: His children.
Hebrews 2: 5, 8 b-11 (NIV 84) – Jesus tasted death (for us) as a man, not an angel. 5 It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. [Psalm 8: 4 -6 as evidence of man’s place under angels, but as the ruler over creation. ] 8 b In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. 10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11 Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. [Psalm 22: 22 & Isaiah 8: 17 -18 as evidence that Jesus calls those who trust Him, Brothers/Children] Jesus has solidarity with us in His life as a man and Jesus has salvation for us by His death as a man. • Now, in Jesus, mankind’s place as the rightful ruler of heaven and earth has been/is being restored!
Hebrews 2: 14 -18 (NIV 84) – Jesus conquered death (for us) as a man, not an angel. 14 Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death—that is, the devil— 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16 For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham’s descendants. 17 For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted. • Jesus died as a man to be our sacrifice and priest to please God and break the Devil’s power over us which is the fear of death.
Conclusion: Jesus conquered death (for us) as a man, not an angel. • Hebrews 2: 5 -8 – Jesus is ruling the heavens and the earth: As a man, because He died as a man. • Hebrews 2: 9 -13 – Jesus is united to mankind: As a family, by dying for us. • Hebrews 2: 14 -18 – Jesus died as a man to be our sacrifice and priest to please God and break the Devil’s power over us which is the fear of death. • If you have Jesus, you have everything, but if you miss Jesus, you miss everything!
