Hebrews Title: Hebrews 1 b: Jesus' Superiority Over Angels as God the Son Text: Hebrews 1: 4 -14 Hebrews 1: 4 (NIV 84) 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. By: Pastor Micah Adamson October 13, 2019
Introduction: Why does it matter that Jesus is God’s Son? • Are angels greater than Jesus? –Is Jesus just an angel, even if He’s the greatest angel? • Jesus is greater than angels since Jesus is God’s Son. – Correctly understanding who Jesus is as God’s Son can help us to avoid wrong views of Jesus today.
How does Hebrews 1 argue that Jesus is God’s Son and therefore God? • Hebrews 1: 4 -14 argues that Jesus is God’s Son, and therefore God, from 7 OT quotes. –These OT verses would have been familiar to the audience, only the argument would be new. –But, to us, both the quotes and the argument are new.
What does the OT teach about the Christ/Messiah/Anointed One? • OT (NIV 84): Anointed One (noun): –Prophet = 2 x –Priest = 6 x –King = 31 x • OT (NIV 84): Anointed (Verb): –Prophet = 1 x –Priest = 15 x –King = 31 x • 1 st Century Definition of Christ/Messiah/Anointed One: – The coming King in the line of David.
What did Jesus teach about the Christ/Messiah/Anointed One? • Jesus argued from Psalm 110: 1 that the Messiah would also be God’s Son and God Himself –Jesus pointed out that the OT taught that the Christ is God. The Jewish leaders couldn’t argue against this. (Matt. 22: 41 -46, Mark 12: 35 -37, Luke 20: 41 -44). –Jesus confessed He was the Christ at His trial, they condemned Him for claiming to be God (Matt. 26: 63 -64, Mark 14: 61 -62, Luke 22: 67 -70) • Hebrews 1 argues from Psalm 110: 1, just like Jesus did.
Hebrews 1: 1 -4 (NIV 84) In the past God spoke to our forefathers through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 1
Hebrews 1: 5 -7 (NIV 84) 5 a For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”? [Psalm 2: 7] 5 b Or again, “I will be his Father, and he will be my Son”? [2 Samuel 7: 14; 1 Chronicles 17: 13] 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him. ” [Deut. 32: 43 LXX] 7 In speaking of the angels he says, “He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire. ” [Psalm 104: 4]
Hebrews 1: 8 -9 (NIV 84) 8 But about the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. 9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. ” [Psalm 45: 6, 7]
Hebrews 1: 10 -12 (NIV 84) 10 He also says, “In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 11 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. 12 You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end. ” [Psalm 102: 25 -27]
Hebrews 1: 13 -14 (NIV 84) 13 To which of the angels did God ever say, “Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet”? [Psalm 110: 1] 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
What is the skeleton of the argument of Hebrews 1 without the OT quotes? Hebrews 1: 4, 5 a, 5 b, 6, 7, 8, 10, 13, 14 (NIV 84) 4 So [Jesus] became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. 5 a For to which of the angels did God ever say? . . . [None] 5 b Or again… 6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says… 7 In speaking of the angels he says… 8 But about the Son he says… 10 He also says… 13 To which of the angels did God ever say… [None] 14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation? When he does wrong, I will punish him with the rod of men, with floggings inflicted by men. 15 But my love will never be taken away from him, as I took it away from Saul, whom I removed from before you. 16 Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever. ’”
