Hebrew Numbers The Hebrew language uses the Arabic numerals, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, to designate numbers. However, the names of Hebrew numbers are differentiated by the masculine and feminine gender of whatever is being quantified or counted. This module introduces the terminology associated with Hebrew cardinal numbers (0, 1, 2, …) and ordinal numbers (1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd, …), along with some of their applications, such as simple (sequential) counting, counting (quantifying) things, order-numbering, and telling time. Hebrew Numbers – Simple (Sequential) Counting Here are the rules for simple counting (one, two, three, …etc. ) in Hebrew: 1. Simple counting is done via the feminine gender cardinal numbers. 2. Simple counting in the units, teens, and 20 s decades follows the feminine gender patterns shown in Slides 2, 3, &4, respectively. 3. Simple counting in the 30 s-90 s decades follows the feminine gender pattern for the 20 s decade shown in Slide 4. 4. Simple counting in the 100 s generally follows the pattern “X 00 Y 0 and Z”, where X 00 stands for any of the 100 s, Y 0 stands for any of the 20 -90 decades, Z stand for any of the feminine gender units 1 -9. For the tens decade 11 -19, the pattern is “X 00 (and) 1 Z”. When there is no Y 0, the pattern is “X 00 (and) Z”. When there is no Z, the pattern is “X 00 (and) Y 0”; here Y 0 stands for any of the 10 -90 decades. Hebrew Numbers – Counting (Quantifying) Things Here are the rules for counting and quantifying things in Hebrew: 1. The numbers follow the gender of what is being counted or quantified and generally adhere to the patterns shown in Slides 2 -7, except for the case of “two”. In this case, the שנים שתים is replaced by שני שתי for the respective genders. 2. The number precedes the object (as in English and other languages, e. g. , “three children”), except for the case of “one”.
