Life is a journey – what happens along the way? For many people, life is a journey, with many special events along the way. What events would you add to this person’s “life-line”?
Special life events
YOUR life is a journey – what happens along the way? Think about your life so far. Add the special events that have happened in your life to your “life-line”. You could include photos of these events. You will start with being born but what will you end with? Think about the big event that you are about to undertake – leaving primary school!
Rites of Passage For people who belong to a religion there are many events on their journey through life that hold special meanings and are marked with special events. These are called Rites of Passage, rituals which mark the passage of time in your life. The next few slides show examples of these Rites of Passage in different religions.

Starting Hebburn Comprehensive School – a Rite of Passage Your task: Think about the following things for your ceremony: • You are going to design a ceremony for your “rite of passage” – starting Hebburn Comprehensive School. Where it will take place? Could it be a school hall? Or on the school field in a marquee? • What clothes you will wear? Could you design a new uniform? Or wear graduation clothes? • What will the symbol be? Could you combine your primary school badge with the Hebburn Comprehensive Badge? • What artefacts will you use? Could you include things that have importance in your primary school like a golden book or mascot? Could you design a special cake? • You will need to think about the rites of passage that you have looked at. Present your ideas as a mood board or poster on plain paper or powerpoint. Include pictures, words and explanations. What gifts would people give? Could they be things to use in secondary school, pencil cases etc? Could it be special mementos such as hoodies or photo frames?
