Isaiah 65: 17: "Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth. The former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind. " This verse tells us that the former things will not be remembered, nor will they come to mind, so for those who love the Lord there is nothing to spoil the joy of being with the Lord forever.

Psalm 102: 25 -27: “ 25 In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. 26 They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded. 27 But you remain the same, and your years will never end. ” There is an OT suggestion here that God’s creation would be changed.

Revelation 4: 1 -6: “After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this. ” 2 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. 3 And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and carnelian. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. 4 Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. 5 From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. 6 Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. ”

7 The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. 8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, ’ who was, and is to come. ”

Revelation 4: 5 refers to the sevenfold Spirit of God – although there is, of course, only one Holy Spirit. This is likely to refer to the seven attributes of the Holy Spirit described in Isaiah 11: 2 -3, speaking prophetically of Jesus who would have the Spirit rest upon Him: “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on him - the Spirit of wisdom and of understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of might, the Spirit of the knowledge and fear of the Lord - 3 and he will delight in the fear of the Lord. ”

Revelation 4: v 9 -11: “ 9 Whenever the living creatures give glory, honour and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives forever and ever, 10 the twentyfour elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They lay their crowns before throne and say: 11 “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honour and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being. ”

Revelation 21: 1: "Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. " The sea is the source of the Satanic beast (Revelation 13: 1) and the place of the dead (Revelation 20: 13). Elsewhere in Scripture, the sea is associated with the heathen (Isaiah 57: 20).

The New Jerusalem, the Holy City was the ultimate city promised to Abraham - Hebrews 11: 10: "For he (Abraham) was looking forward to the city with foundations, whose architect and builder is God. " Revelation 19: 7 -8: “ 7 Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. 8 Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear. (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints). ”

Revelation 21: 3: “And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ” Note how it says that God Himself will be with them – that is us as believers – He won’t send a representative, but we will be with God Himself. John 1: 14: “The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth. ”

Revelation 21: 4: “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. ” God is here removing the effects of the curse that came in Genesis 3: 16 -19. This also means that there will be no sin, for the penalty for sin is death. The absence of death must also mean the absence of sin.

In Revelation 21: 5 Jesus, says, “I am making everything new!” This is an authoritative statement from the very throne of heaven, and it can be trusted! In v 3 we have perfect fellowship, in v 4 there is perfect happiness, and in v 5 there is perfect newness – all to God’s glory.

Revelation 21: 6: “ 6 He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. ” John 4: 13 -14: “ 13 “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life. ” John 7: 37 -38: “ 37 On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them. ”

Revelation 21: 7 -8: “ 7 He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8 But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death. ” Jesus treats the torment of the lake of fire as real, and awful, and we dare not water down this teaching. 1 John 5: 4: “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. ”

Revelation 21: 10 -14 John is shown the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven and shining with God’s glory: “ 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of God, and its brilliance was like that of a very precious jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal. 12 It had a great, high wall with twelve gates, and with twelve angels at the gates. On the gates were written the names of the twelve tribes of Israel. 13 There were three gates on the east, three on the north, three on the south and three on the west. 14 The wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb. ”

The city has high walls and 12 gates, with the names of the tribes of Israel on them. Each gate is made of a single pearl. The wall of the city has 12 foundations, and on them were the names of the 12 apostles. Ephesians 2: 19 -20: "Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and aliens, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of God's household, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus Himself as the chief cornerstone. "

Revelation 21: 15 -17: “ 15 The angel who talked with me had a measuring rod of gold to measure the city, its gates and its walls. 16 The city was laid out like a square, as long as it was wide. He measured the city with the rod and found it to be 12, 000 stadia in length, and as wide and high as it is long. 17 The angel measured the wall using human measurement, and it was 144 cubits thick. ” It will be the largest city known to man, and there will be sufficient room for all of the redeemed people of all ages.

There is no temple in the city – it is not needed because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple (Rev. 4: 22). The temple spoke of the place where God met with man, but now there is unending and undiminished fellowship and relationship between God and man, so a temple is unnecessary. Also there is no sun or moon, v 23: “The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. ” Jesus is the light of the world!

Revelation 21: 24: “The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendour into it. ” There is no night there, v 25: “On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. ” To have night would suggest that the eternal, glorious and selfsufficient light of Jesus would sometimes become dimmed. V 27: “Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life. ”

Revelation 22: 1 -2: “Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month. And the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations. ” Psalm 46: 4: "There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. "

Revelation 7: 16 -17: ‘Never again will they hunger; never again will they thirst. The sun will not beat down on them, nor any scorching heat. 17 For the Lamb at the centre of the throne will be their shepherd; ‘he will lead them to springs of living water. ’ ‘And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. ’” There are 3 quotes from Isaiah in these verses, so it represented the longing of the Jews.

We also see the tree of life, which existed in the Garden of Eden, and which was out of bounds once the tree of the knowledge of good and evil had been eaten from. In v 3 we read the delightful news that there is no more curse – this came with the Fall but is now removed. V 4 says: “They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. ” It is a marvellous thing that we will be able to see His face, for before that the glory of God would have prevented this.
