NOTE: Be sure to turn on adequate water flow to ensure condenser tubes are sufficiently cooled. 2 Reflux vigorously for 6 hours to expel any CO 2 and H 2 S present in sample(s). 3 Fill plastic cup (leave some room for addition of titrant) with Methanol. 4 On mettler titrator using p. H electrode, manually titrate the methanol with 0. 5 N KOH until the p. H adjusts to 11. 2. 5 Weigh approximately 20 ml of the refluxed amine sample into a plastic titration cup and record weight to 2 decimal places. 6 Combine 20 ml of the adjusted 11. 2 p. H methanol with the 20 ml amine sample. 7 Place the combined sample on the titrator and determine the p. H. 8 If the p. H is below 11. 2, titrate the sample manually with 0. 5 N KOH until the p. H of 11. 2 is restored. 9 Record the volume of KOH required to restore the p. H to 11. 2. 10 If the p. H of the combined sample was 11. 2 or greater, report result as 0. 11 If the p. H of the combined sample was below 11. 2, calculate the result as follows: Heat Stable Salts = (ml KOH)(0. 5)(11. 90) weight of 20 ml amine sample 12 Rinse p. H electrode with DI water and store in DI water. 13 Report result in Labworks to 2 decimal places.
