Disclaimer I couldn’t find any personal photos that related to this topic that I picked. I choose this only because I’ve seen this happen before within city-school so I feel like I have a general understanding of the problem.
Bureaucratization of Schools ● To give a brief description of what bureaucracy is in education, it is an organized system that has many rules and regulations to keep things in place. Some people think it helps because it allows everyone to be treated fairly. In my opinion, bureaucracy is the opposite of fairness. My research question would be “How does this system affect high-income students v. s low-income student? ”
HEART: Problems with Disadvantaged Students ● Bureaucracy comes with many difficulties, especially for low-income students and minorities. Bureaucracy requires a strict curriculum that everyone must follow. The problem with that is some of these curriculums are too difficult for the students to understand they aren’t being provided with the proper resources. This system is blocking parents from being able to have a word in how their children's’ school system is ran.
HEAD: Connecting with Sociology ● Chapter 13 speaks a lot on bureaucracy within schools. There were a few different viewpoints on this topic. The functionalists thought this kind of system would have a positive effect on students and staff. Conflict theorist thinks otherwise. They believe that this a one-sided system meant to benefit wealthier social classes. If I were to research this, I would look at different school systems in different areas and compare the quality of the education and the curriculums. I would then look for any statistical data that could back up the evidence.
HANDS: Relevant to Society ● This topic is relevant to society because it has to do with our children and future generation. I’m not saying that they need to completely get rid of bureaucracy. I feel like they should re-evaluate it and figure out how to make it fair for all students and even the teachers.
