Ways cancer harms the body Lesson 2 Cancer Tumor – abnormal mass of tissue

Ways cancer harms the body Lesson 2 Cancer Tumor – abnormal mass of tissue that has no natural role in the body. Two types: 1. benign (noncancerous) can interfere with normal body functions 2. malignant (cancerous) can metastasis (spread throughout the body) Types of Cancers Lymphomas – cancers of the immune system Leukemias – cancers of the blood-forming organs Carcinomas – cancers of the skin and linings of digestive tract & lungs Sarcomas – cancers of the connective tissue (bones, ligaments and muscles)

 • Carcinogens – cancer causing substance • Tobacco use • Radiation Risk Factors

• Carcinogens – cancer causing substance • Tobacco use • Radiation Risk Factors • Sexually Transmitted Diseases • HPV • Hepatitis B – cancer in the liver • Dietary Factors • Fats-colon cells divide faster – increasing risk abnormal cells will form • Dietary fiber – reduce risk of colon cancer • Lifestyle – lack of exercise

Early Detection – can improve chances of successful treatment • Self-Examination • Medical Examination

Early Detection – can improve chances of successful treatment • Self-Examination • Medical Examination Detecting and Treating Cancer Treatment Options • Surgery-remove cancerous mass • Radiation Therapy-kill cancer cells and/or shrink masses • Chemotherapy-chemicals to destroy cancer cells • Immunotherapy-activates immune system to help destroy • Hormone Therapy-uses medication to interfere with certain hormones that helps cancer cells grow – like estrogen (slows growth or kills cancer cells) Remission – period of time that symptoms disappear

Lesson 3 – Allergies, Asthma, Diabetes, Arthritis • Allergies – specific reaction of the immune system to a foreign and frequently harmless substance • Asthma – inflammatory condition in which the small airways in the lungs become narrowed, causing difficulty in breathing

Diabetes – chronic disease that affects the way body cells convert sugar into energy

Diabetes – chronic disease that affects the way body cells convert sugar into energy • Type 2 Diabetes – accounts for 90 -95 percent of all cases of Diabetes • Body is unable to make enough insulin or to use insulin properly • To prevent • Low-fat diet, low sugar diet • Regular physical activity • Type 1 Diabetes – body fails to produce insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, and cells don’t get the energy they need • Cells of pancreas, that produces insulin, are destroyed • Autoimmune disease – immune system mistakenly attacks itself

 • Arthritis-pain and loss of movement in the joints • Osteoarthritis – disease

• Arthritis-pain and loss of movement in the joints • Osteoarthritis – disease in the joints where cartilage breaks down • Rheumatoid Arthritis – debilitating destruction of the joints due to inflammation
