Why is healthy eating so important? • • • Eating a healthy, balanced diet is essential for good health and wellbeing as a whole The main causes of death in Wales are coronary heart disease and cancer - diet is an important risk factor for contracting these diseases It is estimated that in the UK approximately 1/3 of deaths from heart disease and 1/4 of deaths from cancer can be attributed to diet A diet too high in calories accompanied by too little exercise can lead to obesity. In Wales nearly 6 in 10 adults and 3 in 10 children are overweight or obese The links between being overweight and an increased risk of developing serious illnesses including heart disease, type 2 diabetes and stroke has been well documented. A recent study estimated that these illnesses are set to cost the UK economy around £ 20 billion over the next 10 years The Corporate Health Standard
