HEALTHY PEOPLE 2020 OBJECTIVES • Attain high-quality, longer lives free of preventable disease, disability, injury, and premature death; • Achieve health equity, eliminate disparities, and improve the health of all groups; • Create social and physical environments that promote good health for all; and • Promote quality of life, healthy development, and healthy behaviors across all life stages (Healthy People 2020, 2011).

HOW IS OBESITY DEFINED FOR CHILDREN?

On average, 1 in 3 kids is either overweight or obese across the nation (How Is Childhood Obesity Doing? , 2013).

VIRGINIA RANKING • 30% of adults in the state of Virginia are obese, ranking it the 29 th highest adult obesity rate in the nation. Virginia Beach has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the state, of 33%, which is higher than the national average. (Virginia Beach: Obesity Rates & Trends. 2016).

VIRGINIA BEACH AREA PROGRAMS CHILDHOOD OBESITY

VIRGINIA BEACH DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH • The Virginia Beach Department of Public Health (VBDPH) is a state-city cooperative health service agency. They have over 125 full-time employees, 20 part-time employees and countless volunteers each year. They are located at 4 different offices in Virginia Beach. (Virginia Beach Department of Public Health About Us, 2016).

LET’S MOVE! CITIES TOWNS AND COUNTIES • Let’s Move Cities, Towns and Counties is a major component of First Lady Michelle Obama’s comprehensive Let’s Move! initiative, which is dedicated to solving the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. Let’s Move Cities, Towns and Counties calls upon local elected officials to adopt sustainable and holistic policies that improve communities’ access to healthy, affordable food and opportunities for physical activity through five goal areas. • Five medals were awarded to Virginia Beach for action taken to improve access to healthy, affordable food and increase opportunities for physical activity. (Virginia Beach Wins National Medals for Childhood Obesity Efforts, 201

60 SKILLASTICS ACTIVITY KITS • Virginia Beach Department of Parks and Recreation Staff were trained in implementing this innovative physical activity plan which focused on core strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility (Skillastics, 2016. )

SUCCESSFUL PROGRAMS IN OTHER COMMUNITIES CHILDHOOD OBESITY

JUST FOR KIDS! • Just For Kids! uses a variety of cognitive, behavioral and affective techniques to help children make successive, small behavior changes that are sustainable. It is a developmental skills training activity that teaches children how to modify their eating and physical activity behaviors, become more self-nurturing, develop effective limitsetting skills, and build a more positive body image. • Just For Kids! was developed at the University of California School of Medicine, and was successfully tested in San Francisco schools. (Just for Kids! Child Obesity Prevention Program, n. d. ).

S. T. E. P. S. FOR KIDS • Success through Exercise, Physical Fitness and Sharing Information (STEPS) is a health intervention program to assist families in the fight against childhood obesity. Through interactive educational sessions on nutrition and exercise, families learn how to implement and sustain necessary lifestyle changes to benefit their children's health. (S. T. E. P. S. for Kids, n. d. ).

JUST SAY YES TO FRUITS & VEGETABLES • The Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables Program (JSY) delivers nutrition education to low-income New Yorkers who receive benefits from SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. CONCLUSION • It is clear that many communities, including that of Virginia Beach, are trying to combat the disease of childhood obesity. But the battle is uphill as access to unhealthy food and low activity levels are prevalent in the area. • Various programs are starting to make a dent in the educational goals, but the numbers are still trending up.

• It is our job as nurses to continue the efforts put for by various programs to get the word out there that no one should wait to get healthy. • Children need to learn the importance of choosing well balanced foods and remaining active. CONCLUSION
