Gestational vs. pre-pregnancy diabetes Gestational diabetes • Diabetes diagnosed during pregnancy and goes away after pregnancy Pre-pregnancy diabetes • Type 1 or type 2 diabetes before pregnancy
Screening for gestational diabetes � Your doctor should test you for gestational diabetes between 24 -28 weeks of pregnancy � First Nations women should be tested during the 1 st trimester � If you test negative during the first trimester you should still be tested again in both the 2 nd and 3 rd trimester
Risk factors for gestational diabetes � Being aboriginal � Having had gestational diabetes in the past � Given birth to a baby who weighs more than 9 lbs � 35 years old or older � Obese � Having Acanthosis Nigricans
Risks for mom and baby � Risks for mom � Having a difficult labour and delivery � Increased chance of having a caesarean section � Risk of getting type 2 diabetes later in life � � Risks for baby � Gaining too much weight � Delivering a large baby can make labour hard on the baby � Low blood sugar after delivery � Breathing problems � Long-term risk for obesity and type 2 diabetes
Good news! • Women who have gestational diabetes can still have a healthy pregnancy • Even though a woman has diabetes during pregnancy, her baby will not be born with diabetes 7
What can you do to have a healthy pregnancy? • • • Eat healthy foods Gain a healthy amount of weight Be physically active every day Test your blood sugar levels regularly Take insulin if needed 8
Healthy eating • • There is no special ‘diabetes pregnancy’ diet Eat a variety of foods from all four food groups • • • Vegetables and Fruit Grain Products Milk and Alternatives Meat and Alternatives Make healthy choices most of the time Distribute carbohydrate foods throughout the day 9

Healthy eating • • Pregnant women only need 2 -3 more servings from Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide per day • 100 calories during 1 st trimester and • 350 -450 calories during the 2 nd and 3 rd trimesters Include some protein in each meal Eat more vegetables Avoid alcohol and smoking 11
Fibre is a friend! Pregnant women need at least 25 g of fibre per day � Benefits of fibre: › Keeps the digestive system healthy and prevents constipation › Helps to manage weight › Helps keep blood sugar levels within a normal range � Sources of fibre: Ø Legumes and dried beans (kidney beans, white beans, etc) Ø Vegetables & fruit Ø Grain products � How can you increase
