Healthy Choices ENERGY FOR THE BODY
Energy Balance : Energy balance is the balance your body needs between energy coming in (from what you eat and drink) and energy going out (for the things you do).
What does my body need? Proteins Carbohydrates Fats/Lipids
Proteins You need protein in your diet to help your body repair cells and make new ones. Protein is also important for growth and development. Meats, cheese, beans, eggs, yogurt, nuts and seeds.
Carbohydrates Your body uses carbohydrates (carbs) to make glucose which is the fuel that gives you energy and helps keep everything going. Your body can use glucose immediately or store it in your liver and muscles for when it is needed. Food choices for carbohydrates: Fruits Vegetables Breads, cereals, and other grains Milk and milk products sugar-sweetened Foods containing added sugars (e. g. , cakes, cookies, and beverages)
Fats/Lipids Fats are primarily a form of energy reserves and insulation in the body, fats can be burned to make energy when we need energy and are not getting enough from our diet.
Calories A calorie is a unit of energy. When you hear something contains 100 calories, it's a way of describing how much energy your body could get from eating or drinking it. Calories aren't bad for you. Your body needs calories for energy. But eating too many calories — and not burning enough of them off through activity — can lead to weight gain.
Metabolism Metabolism is a collection of chemical reactions that takes place in the body's cells. Metabolism converts the fuel in the food we eat into the energy needed to power everything we do, from moving to thinking to growing.
BMR Your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) is an estimate of how many calories you'd burn if you were to do nothing but rest for 24 hours It represents the minimum amount of energy needed to keep your body functioning, including breathing and keeping your heart beating. http: //www. bmi-calculator. net/bmr-calculator/ This number tends to get lower the older you get.
