Maternity Leave � In Sweden, Women receive 18 months of maternity leave at 80% of salary. The cost is shared between employer and the state. � The United States, has no national law which mandates paid time off for new parents. The Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) does give up to 12 weeks of (potentially unpaid) parental leave for many American workers.
Sweden: Sick Leave � People can take paid sick leave at first through their employer and after 2 weeks through various government funds. � After that the income is paid for the rest of the year at 75% for a maximum 550 days. A doctor must verify the illness within a week of the first sick day. � If a child less than 12 years old is sick, a parent can get paid leave to take care of the child. In this case you get paid for the first day.
