Types of Emotions n Emotions: are your feelings created in response to thoughts about remarks, or events. n Thoughts create emotions n Three categories of emotions. – Pleasant – Unpleasant – Neutral

Common Unpleasant Emotions n Anger: results from feelings of unfairness or getting taken advantage of. n Sadness: comes from thoughts of loss. n Anxiety: comes from thoughts of danger. n Frustration: results from unmet expectations. n Guilt: results from the thought that you are bad.
Spectrum of Emotions n Most emotions come in a spectrum or continuum. – Example: Pleasure/Happiness/Joy n n n Pleasure = intense, but short lasting Happiness = contentment, satisfaction Joy = deep satisfaction, permanent, isn’t based on external circumstances Joy Deepest Happiness Pleasure Superficial
Where on the Spectrum? n Anger: a strong feeling of annoyance or displeasure. A common n Frustration: A feeling of being upset or annoyed because of n n emotion felt especially during the teen years. inability to change or achieve something. Fury: intense, disordered, and often destructive rage Put these 3 on a spectrum/continuum in your notes.
Expressing Unpleasant Feelings n It’s normal and healthy to feel unpleasant emotions from time to time. n Emotions themselves are neither good or bad. n How I express these emotions is important.

Dealing With Difficult Emotions n Step 1: Identify the Emotion – Be aware of how you feel. n That guy Ian in my study group makes me so mad! – Don't hide how you feel from yourself. n You might not want to broadcast your feelings, but don't suppress your feelings entirely. n n Step 2: Take Action – Think about the healthiest way to express your emotion. – Change your mood by doing something that makes you feel better. Step 3: Get Help With Difficult Emotions

Managing Emotions n Healthy ways to handle our emotions: – Positive Attitude (gratitude for little things) – Meditation – Physical Activity – Listening to Understand – Journaling – Relaxation (reading, music, hobbies) – Time Management – Healthy Support System n Peer AND adult
Emotional “BAND AID” Coping Mechanisms Denial – refusing an emotion or problem. n All or Nothing – If a situation falls short of perfect it is seen n as a total failure. Sublimation – redirecting your feelings into some other activity. n Rationalization – making excuses for actions or feelings n Displacement – transferring emotions from the original source to another. n
More “BAND AID” Coping n Projection – putting your own faults onto another person. n Regression – reverting to immature behavior to express emotions. n Reaction Formation – behaving in a manner opposite to the way you are feeling.
