Welcome to the Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC)! The HSSC opened on the SMU’s

Welcome to the Health Sciences Simulation Center (HSSC)! The HSSC opened on the SMU’s Oakland Campus in 2006. The HSSC is an 11, 000 square foot facility designed to facilitate immersive and simulation-based learning (SBL). The HSSC provides SMU students, faculty, and working professionals from our community partners, opportunities to interact and learn using advanced technology in a safe and supportive environment. In addition to the HSSC on the Oakland Campus, the San Francisco Peninsula and the Sacramento Campuses have the space, equipment and faculty to implement simulation-based learning as well as support most methods of technology-enhanced teaching. Advanced Technology From task trainers, to full body human patient simulators, to medical equipment

Advanced Technology From task trainers, to full body human patient simulators, to medical equipment used in all types of healthcare settings, the HSSC and our other campuses house a full inventory of high-tech products. Students and practicing professionals have opportunities to learn using current, sophisticated technology and technologically advanced equipment before they are expected to use them on real patients in clinical practice. Experiential & Reflective Learning Authentic, experiential learning combined with reflective learning defines simulation-based education.

Experiential & Reflective Learning Authentic, experiential learning combined with reflective learning defines simulation-based education. We have simulation suites, large multipurpose rooms, and small, clinic-style rooms designed so that any setting where people receive health care can be replicated. The center has a robust audio-visual and information management system allowing for video capture from any HSSC room and easy access to viewing the recordings. The HSSC’s faculty and technical staff support academic faculty on all campuses in the use of mannequin-based simulation and standardized patient simulation according to best practices. Interprofessional Education The HSSC is a learning environment that is perfectly suited to conduct

Interprofessional Education The HSSC is a learning environment that is perfectly suited to conduct interprofessional education (IPE) through simulation-based team training. Courses that focus on patient safety and communication are offered to students from SMU’s nine academic programs as well as medical students from the UC Berkeley–UC San Francisco Joint Medical Program and the John F. Kennedy University Doctor of Psychology Program. Faculty receive training in how to facilitate IPE, with special emphasis on how to conduct effective debriefings after simulation exercises. Team. STEPPS® at SMU Team. STEPPS® is an evidence-based framework to optimize team performance

Team. STEPPS® at SMU Team. STEPPS® is an evidence-based framework to optimize team performance across the heath care delivery system. As educators of future healthcare providers in multiple professions, SMU is a key component of the healthcare system. The SMU initiative, Team. STEPPS@SMU is an innovative and ambitious project to establish teamwork and communication as an integral part of our culture. The HSSC serves as the hub of this initiative, providing simulationbased learning as a feature of the SMU brand of Team. STEPPS training, which is offered to students, faculty, staff and administrators from all campuses. Samuel Merritt University

Advantages of Simulation • • • The model for an environment focused on patient

Advantages of Simulation • • • The model for an environment focused on patient safety Hands-on experience much earlier in the curriculum A more direct connection between theory and practice Freedom to make mistakes and learn from them Immediate feedback to reinforce and deepen learning More dynamic interactions among student and faculty Samuel Merritt University

Thank You The HSSC has two resource sites available to faculty available to provide

Thank You The HSSC has two resource sites available to faculty available to provide much more information for you on how to access our resources and to learn more about simulation-based learning at Samuel Merritt University. The HSSC website provides information about our facility, our team, our philosophy and it offers a video of testimonials from students and faculty who have experienced simulation-based learning at the HSSC. The HSSC has a Canvas course, the HSSC Faculty Resource Site, which has information and links to scheduling, policies, faculty development, and much more. The Canvas course is accessible by self-enrolling. We look forward to meeting and collaborating with you. Samuel Merritt University
