Health Program Overview Health education is provided once in a 6 -day cycle for Grades 3 and 4. Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2 receive health education from their classroom teachers and periodically by the Health and PE department. The following topics are taught at each grade level: Kindergarten, 1 st and 2 nd Grades: Personal Hygiene: Hand washing and dental care Safety: Strangers, school, bus, playground, biking, sun Grade 3 Health Teacher: Mrs. Marino Cells Skeletal System Muscular System Dental Care Digestive System Nutrition Environmental Health Grade 4 Health Teacher: Mr. Hopkins Circulatory System Nervous System Respiratory System Immune System Diseases – communicable and Medicine safety, peer pressure non-communicable Substance Use and Abuse – tobacco and alcohol Nutrition: Healthy food choices Growth and Development - Substance Use and Abuse: Character Education: Honesty, respect, sportsmanship, diligence, bravery, cooperation. Different emphasis and materials are used at each grade level. human growth and development, puberty, male and female reproductive system anatomy (taught in the Spring) Brain and Nervous System Health Education Expectations for Grades 3 and 4 Homework – When homework is assigned, it is explained in health class and is given to classroom teachers for students to write in their daily planner. Homework is due the following week at the beginning of the class. We encourage students to start homework soon after it is received to avoid last minute conflicts and stress. Assessments & Tests - Grades are determined by class participation, completion of homework and test/project results. When health tests are given at the end of each unit, students receive study guides, labeling sheets, and/or reading materials for studying prior to the test. Test results lower than a 70% require a parent signature before being returned to the teacher.
