Health Care Support Worker Training NHS Borders
• NHS Borders developed Health Care Support Worker training as a result of an unannounced HAI inspection in June 2017 • 4 areas of improvement were identified – one in the initial assessment and 3 in the paperwork section
Screening and initial assessment Staff must ensure that a nutritional care assessment is undertaken within 24 hours of admission for all hospital patients, this includes and assessment of their oral health status
Paperwork Nutritional assessment “should include a documented oral health status” The Oral healthcare assessment and provision of oral care sections identified improvement was needed in the assessment process, recording and appropriate referral into dental services
Person Centred Care Planning • Identified a need for the introduction of care plans for nutrition and oral care. • Also noted -Oral Care was not always being recorded and where it was, unclear what had been provided. • gaps in timely care provision
Training • Training was identified as an area of improvement for Food Fluid and Nutrition Link Nurses and Health Care Support Workers
Training and Development • NHS Borders Training &Development Clinical Practice Facilitators developed and launched Back to Basics training programme for FFN Link Nurses and HCSWs • Attendees come from Acute and Community units with some care home HCSW’s from integrated care services • Work station on Oral Health/C 4 S is embedded in training
Numbers Trained • FFN Nurse leads – 34 • HCSW’s – 30 All staff trained using Basic C 4 S training within the programme timetable and evaluation is managed by NHS Borders T&D team.
Going Forward…. . • C 4 S Included in the Back to Basics training plan until March 2019. • Promote C 4 S with HCSW’s • Encourage HCSW’s to complete the Foundation course • Develop C 4 S Champion role within wards
