Health Care in Somaliland 18/02/2021 1
• I first returned to Somaliland when on a UN fact-finding mission on the 27 th of June 1991 • Findings: • 95% of Hargeisa was destroyed in civil war. • Hargeisa had less than 10 thousand • City was strewn with landmines • No potable water, no food, no health care • 250, 000 had died in the war • One million of our people were in refugee camps wherever they could find refuge 18/02/2021 2
My thoughts …. options…. • Is there anything I can do for country ? • Should I go as far away as possible and spend my retirement years somewhere else ? My decision: • I will Go home and build a hospital that helps the women and children of my country 18/02/2021 5

The Somaliland Solution • With our limited resources, we know that country-wide coverage with doctors and graduate midwives will not be possible for a long time which is why we have chosen a low -tech, low-cost and time-effective solution : • To train as many Community Midwives as we can, now !
Midwives lower MMR • When the national MMR for Somaliland is 1600/100, 000 The training of midwives has helped us lower the MMR rate at our hospital to less than 400/100, 000

Maternal Mortality • When the Maternal Mortality of Somali women is 1600/100, 000 live births, we have reduced maternal mortality in our hospital to 400/100, 000 which is a quarter of he national average. 18/02/2021 31
A lesson for the world: The Somaliland experiment • If Somaliland which receives the least support from the International community can reduce Maternal Mortality through the training of midwives, then anybody can do it !
