You will be working individually and alongside colleagues from a range of other disciplines to carry out inspections, investigate incidents, and assess safety reports. Whilst much of our work is focused on the major hazards (COMAH) sector, you may also have opportunities to carry out work in a range of areas including Biological Agents, Mines, Fairgrounds, and Explosives. Alongside our core inspection and investigation work, we seek to positively influence the development and implementation of Human Factors in industry by working with various industry bodies. We sit on technical committees and feed into guidance and Contact us standards documents which further drive forward the importance and standing of Human Factors in industry. As part of initial training you will develop skills in understanding and applying legal standards to our work. In this part of the role you may be needed to provide expert witness testimony to the court following incidents and accidents. Introduction The Role Candidate Profile Salary and Benefits Recruitment Process Diversity and Equality FAQ’s About the Role Key Responsibilities • Inspect a variety of workplaces, either on your own or with a specialist team, to make sure that risks are handled safely, driving improvements and gaining commitment to align with the law. • Forensic analysis of Human Factors related concerns, accidents and reportable incidents to identify the root cause and where necessary, lead the technical aspect of the investigation, calling in other specialist support and supporting legal action to prevent a recurrence; • Advise on Human Factors matters in support of health and safety compliance, to HSE colleagues, professional bodies and trade associations such as the British Standards Institute, the Energy Contact us Institute and the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, on how conditions compare with minimum legal requirements and good practice; • Produce reports to provide specialist opinion to guide legal decisions; • Appear as a specialist witness at tribunals, inquests and prosecutions; • Secure intelligence, share information and advice on policy, research, and guidance to benefit other Government departments, the public, industry, professional bodies and trade associations. • Contribute as a member of the Human Factors team to promote health and safety improvements to national and international standards at various forums, and at relevant conferences. • Given that HSE regulates sites across the whole of GB you will be expected to spend short periods working away from home. Site visits will require use of personal protective equipment and may involve accessing plant and machinery in hard to reach areas e. g. by use of fixed vertical ladders. Training At HSE, you can develop your expertise even further. While working, you will complete specialist training to understand the legal requirements of this front-line role. This includes a mixture of e-learning and face to face tutorials built into your first two year with us. As well as learning on the job, you can complete bespoke courses to develop and grow your technical knowledge.
Introduction The Role Candidate Profile Salary and Benefits Recruitment Process Diversity and Equality FAQ’s Candidate Profile Person Specification To excel at this role, you will have; well in a team and can build robust relationships with employers and other partners. • have a breadth of practical experience of applying Human Factors expertise within the workplace, ideally with experience of applying Human Factors to the control of risks within major hazards industries (such as the Chemical and Downstream Oil Industries) Licences • a practical understanding of design and operation of socio-technical systems, including experience of applying the principles of Human Factors to engineering design projects; Qualifications • experience of assessing human reliability in the context of major accident risk assessments to ensure reliance on human performance is proportionate to risk, including an understanding of both qualitative and quantitative human reliability assessment techniques. • Practical experience of using Human Factors methods for the management of workload, fatigue, staffing levels, organisational change and critical communications. • Experience of applying Human Factors in an information security context would be beneficial. Aside from this technical experience, you will also have strong communication, analysis and planning skills.
