WHY TEACH HFLE? ? Rationale: HFLE seeks to empower students with the necessary life skills that will improve coping mechanisms and create a conducive environment for social, cognitive and emotional development.
What are the benefits of HFLE? The foundations of the life skills approach rests on evidence which reveals that competencies in the use of life skills can: Prevent or delay the onset of drug use Prevent high risk sexual behaviour Facilitate anger management and conflict resolution Improve academic performance and Promote positive social adjustment Creates a healthy school environment Develops skills for present and future use
Life Skills Education that focuses on the development of “abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enables individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life. ” (WHO, 1993)
Importance of Life Skills Education Life skills based health education: Ø Enables students to apply knowledge Ø Develops attitudes and skills to promote ones health (physical, metal. . . ) and the health of others. Ø Empowers students to take positive actions to protect themselves and to promote positive social relationships
