HD/DVD 9 proposals (7 Mb/s) • MPEG 2 – Mitsubishi • H. 264 ( = AVC, MPEG 4 ISO/IEC 14496 -10, ) – Apple, Pioneer, Sand Video, Toshiba • MPEG 4 ASP – DIVx, i. VAST, JVC • WMV 9 – Micro. Soft - Demo. Grafx • DVD compatible: SD MPEG 2 + HD H. 264 – Philips, Thomson Co. C Video Compression Systems, Dr. Jan H. Giesen, 13. 06. 2003 7
Video Format: MPEG 4 AVC • Proposed by Toshiba • Main Profile, Level 4. I: – I + P picture types, In-loop deblocking, 1/4 sample motion compensation, VLC-based entropy coding, Tree-structured motion segmentation down to 4 x 4 block size, 4: 2: 0 – Bi-predictive slices, CABAC, Weighted prediction, Adaptive block-size transforms – Interlace pictures, frame/field adaptive at picture and macroblock level Co. C Video Compression Systems, Dr. Jan H. Giesen, 13. 06. 2003 8
Video Format: MPEG 4 AVC • Restrictions to Level Limits: – Max bitrate: 29. 4 Mbps instread of 50 Mbps – CPB buffer size: 30 Mbits instead of 62. 5 Mbits – Prediction (GOVU) structure. • AVC encapsulation into MPEG 2 PS: – Encapsulation as MPEG video stream – STREAM_ID: 0 x. E 1 (DVD MPEG 2 Video Stream ID: 0 x. E 0) Co. C Video Compression Systems, Dr. Jan H. Giesen, 13. 06. 2003 9
Video Format: WMV 9 • Proposed by Microsoft • WMV 9 encapsulation into MPEG 2 PS: – Extended STREAM_ID: 0 x. FD as defined in ISO/IEC 13818 -1: 2000/FPDAM – Stream ID Extension field in PES Header – Not compatible to existing mechanism to encapsulate “private” streams in DVD VOBs Co. Conclusions • HD movies on DVD 9 @ 7 -10 Mbs is feasible with good Quality • Also feasible in DVD backwards compatible way using dual layer MP 2/AVC or even MP 2/MP 2. • Picture quality @ DVD 9 bitrates (all codecs) is NOT seen as sufficient by Studios. • Currently only MPEG 2 @ 20 -24 Mbs is seen as sufficient by Studios more interest in Blue Laser Disc Formats than in HD on DVD 9 Co.
