Double-layer HD DVDs support up to 8 hours of HD content. Triple-layer 45 GB HD DVD is the maximum capacity. How does HD DVD work? Blue laser technology • • HD DVD discs write data on a layer 0. 6 millimeters from the surface, the same depth as current DVDs. Red laser (650 nanometers) is used for DVD today – by contrast HD DVD uses blue laser, which operates at lower wavelengths (405 nanometers) Why do nanometers matter? Shorter wavelengths suffer less diffraction, which enables a tight focus on the read-write surface.
