Introduction Welcome to our Roadshow and thank you for coming! 2
Research on HBV and Forced Marriage 3
Our Research Reveals… • HBV cannot always be categorised as DV/IPV? • State agencies are still letting victims down? • Criminalisation of forced marriages has not worked? • Separate sentencing guidelines? • Non-criminal justice responses need to be pursued? • Lack of support for male victims? 4
Aims of the Roadshow • Raise public awareness on HBV and Forced Marriages • Bring together key stakeholders, community groups and members of the public within one arena • For people, whatever their background, to add their own voices • Access new and emerging research • Produce final outcomes and policy recommendations 5
Current Research at MMU • Men as victims of HBV and forced marriage • Forced Marriage Unit (FMU) (2017) – 80% women; 20% men • Underreported/unreliable nature of statistics • Lack of research on male experiences • Joint project: • MMU, Jeena and The Elm Foundation 6
Problems with Male Reporting • Social construction of ‘victims’ • Masculinities • Men not coming forward / not being believed • Lack of male refuges / organisations supporting men • Resistance by women’s-only organisations? 7
Possible Solutions? • Improve awareness? • HBV strategy? • Improve access to male spaces / support networks? • Recruitment of diverse support workers? • Increased funding to support male victims? • Debate, discussion and evaluations (today) 8
