Wet Hand Work Wet from hand washing or cutting/shampooing hair ClientWorker: electric shock Client/worker: tools slip and cut someone Prevent this by drying your hands!!
Slips and Trips Examples: cords from tools, boxes on the floor, loose hair on the floor, water on the floor Client/worker: trip on the cords— secure them back or tuck them under the counter Client/worker: slip on hair or water on floor—wipe up spills and sweep hair ASAP Client/woker: trip on boxes—place boxes out of walking path
Products and Chemicals Styling products, bleach, cleaning products, barbicide(disinfectant for combs), hair dye Client: allergic reaction; client: burn skin; cross-contamination; Client/worker: inihaling fumes Prevent by being cautious, not using excess product on client, proper ventilation and warning client
Fire Examples: too many plugs, Flammable products near heat sources, Faulty wiring/cords, hot tools close to paper or other flammables Worker/client: Electrocution from exposed wires—replace the wire Keep products away from heat sources
Standing for long periods Worker: back problems, fatigue Sit when possible (while client is paying), schedule breaks between clients, stretch, cushion mat
Burns Examples: heat tools like curling irons; hot water (scalding) when shampooing; hair dryer bowl; chemicals like bleach Client mostly but also worker Be extremely cautious when using hot tools Test water temperature before applying to client then ask if temp is ok Do a patch test when dying hair; ask about skin sensitivity; be very cautious Wear gloves when mixing chemicals (worker)
Blades and sharp instruments Examples: scissors, razors, tweezers, cuticle scissors, nail clippers Client/worker could be cut Always have dry hands; be aware!! Be very careful
Heavy lifting Examples: product boxes Worker: hurt back, fall, Lift with knees or use a dolly for boxes that are too heavy Lift straight up-no twisting
Working Alone No help in time of emergency Vulnerable to attacks Have 911 on speed-dial
