Hawaii Moon Base Reboot What we need to do • Review our goals & organization • Determine what we need on the Moon Base • Figure out what information we need • Find sources of information & gather data • Put together the pieces • Build it, Model it, Print it, Assemble it
Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Review our goals • Main Goal: Design a Hawai’ian Moon Base Analogue • Determine what’s needed, plus what would be good to have • Figure out how many structures, what type/style, how big • Layout the structures, connections, airlock locations, etc. • 2 nd Goal: Model/Build/Print a scale model display • Show structures, landing pad/blast deflector, moonscape • Scaled to fit in a custom travel display case (suit case sized)
Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Moon Base Basic Requirements • Provide a place for a team of 4 to live & work for 6 months in a Moon-like environment (spacesuits, airlocks, etc. ) • Make it look & operate like a real Moon Base. • Keep it small, keep it light. • Costs $60, 000 to put 1 lb. on the Moon. • Putting an microwave oven on the Moon would cost $1, 920, 000 • Crazy ideas are okay. They just might work, or spark a breakthrough. • Assumptions for the real Moon Base: • Phase 1 is just the basics, minimum to survive & prep for Phase 2 • Building exterior 3 -D printed moon dirt, interior is inflated (ESA model) • Supplies & equipment arrives from Earth • Phase 2 has working farm, light fabrication, etc.
Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Assumptions to use • Initial Moon landings (Pre-Phase 1) • • Cargo, robots & basic habitat inflatable habitat How many buildings? How big? Don’t forget the workspace. How do you connect them together? How does all this work • Hawaii Moon Base: • Fully functional Phase 1 facility • Exploring, preparing for Phase 2 • Testing tech – recycling, repurposing, growing, printing, melting
Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Review our organization • Who’s on the team? How many schools? Do we need more? How do we get them? • We need to find an experienced professional to lead. Be an interface to Henk and to tech experts, preferably in Hawaii • Need a lead from each school. Who’s the leader? Who wants to be? • One school has a team name. Do we want one for the whole team? Maybe something that can grow into a multi-year, interschool collaboration? • Decide when to have meetings. Bi-weekly leader calls?
Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Determine what’s needed on the Moon Base • Think of your house. What things do you use daily? • Think of your daily routine. What do you do before school, when you get home from school? • Walk around your house with a notebook & record what you see. • How big are the rooms in the house? Bathroom, bedroom? Get a tape measure & measure the smallest bathroom, your bed, desk. • Now think about structures & “systems”. • Do you have a garage? what’s in it? • Is your house hot? Why not? Look at that system, inside & outside. Any switches/wires/tubes? • Where does your water come from? Is it hot? How? • Where’s the electricity come from? Find the circuit breaker panel. • Do you have a garden? What does your garden need?
Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Determine what’s needed on the Moon Base • What do you think is needed for the Moon Base? • Review your lists. Group them together when it makes sense. • How many buildings? How big? Don’t forget the workspace. • How do you connect them together? • How does all this work • What particular problems exist on the Moon • Light, dark, hot, cold, no air, moon dust, rocks, meteors, radiation • Power (how much? ) • Where can we find relevant information & ideas?

Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Put the pieces together • Take our list of needed things • Look at what NASA, ESA, Bigelow, HI-SEAS did • Adapt to our needs, keeping future growth in mind • Determine how big our architectural model of the Hawaii Moon Base should be. • Start sizing the architectural model pieces • Habitats, work areas, other structures
Hawaii Moon Base Reboot Build it, Model it, Print it, Assemble it • Review our goals & organization • Figure out what information we need • Find sources of information & gather data • Put together the pieces
