Have you ever wondered how to save money at our school? We could save over $2, 000! It may be A LOT easier than you thought. In fact, the only thing you have to do is… Flip the Switch! Our school wastes over $2, 000 per year because we don’t turn off the lights. If we did, and if we saved that much money, think of how much we could do for our school! Now, Girl Scout Troop #64528, introduces you to the Flip the Switch Campaign!
What You Need To Know We did an electrical energy assessment on different areas of the school. We counted lights in the learning areas of the building (classrooms, hallways, gyms, cafeteria, etc. ). Then we calculated all the wattage of those lights. Once we finished that, we estimated the hours per year that the lights are on when the rooms are unoccupied. The chart on the right shows how much money could be saved per year if we turned off the lights when we leave the room. 540 hrs. = Amount of time the lights on upper floor are left on while space is unoccupied How much this wastes = about $1, 400 Part of School Upper Floor $1, 428. 00 Lower Floor $110. 00 Ground Floor Gym $356. 99 Ground Floor Cafeteria $445. 36 Lobby $74. 36 Library and Tech Rooms $110. 00 Total Saved $2, 806. 03
What YOU, Miscoe Staff and Students, Can Do To Help ● Turn off the lights when you leave the room ● Tell your friends and teachers about Flip the Switch. ● Teachers, assign a student to turn off the lights at the last block of the day. This student can be the “Switch Flipper” for the day (week, month, etc. ). ● You can try this at home, too!
