Shame: a painful feeling of humiliation or distress caused by the consciousness of wrong or foolish behaviour. 2

Shame: That sinking feeling you get when you know you’ve messed up, and it can be made worse if you know that other people are going to find out about what you’ve done. 3

Christians believe that Jesus died to save the lives of every human being because God loves them 12

Romans 5: 6 -8 ‘Christ arrives right on time to make this happen. He didn’t, and doesn’t, wait for us to get ready. He presented himself for this sacrificial death when we were far too weak and rebellious to do anything to get ourselves ready. And even if we hadn’t been so weak, we wouldn’t have known what to do anyway. We can understand someone dying for a person worth dying for, and we can understand how someone good and noble could inspire us to selfless sacrifice. The good news is that people don’t have to wonder about what to do about guilt and shame. They can let Jesus take care of it. 15

Reflection Imagine you are carrying a heavy bag full of shame and embarrassment about all the things you’ve done and said that you wish you hadn’t. Imagine stopping and putting the bag down on the ground and walking away, leaving the shame and embarrassment behind. 16
