College Awareness Program • Only a handful of Chileans are Harvard College graduates. RF • Emergente We set up a “College” tab within the HC website that includes all the information necessary for: • potential applicants; • parents; and • school teachers To get a good sense of Harvard´s Academics, financial aid and life at Harvard in general. It is deliberately set up in Spanish • We were able to bring Jim Pautz, from Harvard Admissions Office, to deliver a speech about Harvard College and the application process. The meeting was attended by over 20 people, mostly parents and their children. Some school teachers were present too • Every so often, Harvard sends officers to deliver talks at select feeder schools. So has Wharton, Yale and others in the past few years. 5
College Awareness Program (cont. ) What went right? RF Emergente • We kick-started the Program in Chile at the DRCLAS´s offices • We reached for all of the English-speaking schools (Asociación Colegios Británicos) and also to Chile´s premier public schools (Instituto Nacional (boys) and Liceo Carmela Carvajal (girls) • We had a Chilean Harvard student (G. Huerta) discuss her experience at Harvard College • Nicholas Billikoff, who interviews Harvard College applicants from Chile also attended • Our College Awareness website has been source of inspiration for other clubs to follow suit • We engaged some of the DRCLAS´s visiting students to help us, and they were very enthusiastic about it and committed to help by connecting with potential applicants 6
College Awareness Program (cont. ) What went not-so-right? RF Emergente • We were not able to gather a large crowd. • The elite public schools did not seem interested: at the Headmaster level (probably ignorance or nearsightedness) and at the student level: English, English! • The English-speaking schools did not respond as we expected. We will have to aim at specific people in each institution • The Chilean student who applied and was admitted (Ms. Constanza Vidal) was living in Singapore at the time and did not attend Jim Pautz´s lecture. We will talk about her later • We are not aware on how the follow-up with Admissions works after these meetings, if any; and • Reimbursing Jim Pautz´s travel expenses was messy 7
College Awareness Program (cont. ) Going Forward? RF Emergente • Target key people in every institution and develop an ongoing relationship with schools, both private and public • Link the College Awareness Program with the HACIA Democracy competition and appoint a Board Member to focus on these efforts exclusively • We will make good use of our “poster children”, recent Chilean Harvard College grads: • • • Sebastian Marambio, currently working at the Office of the President Jenny Arias, currently working at the Ministry of Finance others • Institutionalize scholarships (we have helped Giselle Huerta and will now work on helping Constanza Vidal) • Strenghten the relationship with UWC, United World Colleges 8
