“ Harry Potter has [become] such an allencompassing phenomenon that from this vantage point, it’s hard to see the full scope what it accomplished: It feels as though publishing and fandom and children’s literature and all of pop culture have always been the way we know them today. But Harry Potter changed the world. ” -”How Harry Potter changed the world”

BACK About the Author Use the information below to answer the questions on your worksheet Joanne Rowling was born in England in 1965. She worked as a researcher and secretary for Amnesty International when she had the idea for Harry Potter while riding on a train that had been delayed for four hours. It took seven years to write & publish the first book in the series, called Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in the U. K. . She used the initials “J. K. ” because the publishers worried a book written by a woman wouldn’t appeal young boys. At the time of publication, Rowling was a single mother living in poverty. Since Harry Potter, Rowling has written one unrelated novel under her own name, a series of crime novels under a pseudonym, and screenplays to two Harry Potter prequels, among other works.

BACK THEMES On your worksheet, write a one-paragraph response to ONE of the following prompts: Harry constantly breaks school rules (and sometimes wizarding law). Though his reasoning is often foolish, it is never done out of disrespect or malice. Can a hero be a hero by breaking rules? Are there real-life examples? Hermione is often maligned for being “Muggle-born” (born to non-magic parents), despite being the best student in her year. What does the juxtaposition of others’ perception of her with her academic success say about blind prejudice? Harry’s cousin Dudley is a bullying, spoiled brat who is never told “no” by his parents. What is so bad about always getting everything that you want?
