SUBJECTS IN DECLARATIVE SENTENCES Here and there are never the subject of a sentence. Usually adverbs that modify the verb by telling where something is located. There occasionally will begin a sentence as an introductory word. Inverted Sentence: subject follows the verb. Rearranged to subjectverb order, it is easier to identify the subject.
DECLARATIVE SENTENCE EXAMPLES Sentences Beginning with Here or There Sentences rearranged in Subject. Verb order There are the downtown buildings. The downtown buildings are there. Here is the ticket for your trip. The ticket for your trip is here. There is money in the cash register. Money is in the cash register there. • In some declarative sentences, the subject is placed after the verb in order to give the subject greater emphasis. • Inverted sentences often begin with a prepositional phrase.
SUBJECTS IN INTERROGATIVE SENTENCES May be subject-verb order or verb-subject order. In interrogative sentences, the subject often follows the verb. Sentence can begin with a verb, a helping verb, or who, what, when, where, why and how. Some sentences divide the helping verb from the main verb.

SUBJECTS IN IMPERATIVE SENTENCES In imperative sentences, the subject is understood to be you. Imperative Sentences with You Added First, visit the Sears Tower. First, [you] visit the Sears Tower. After the tour, come home right away. After the tour, [you] come home right away. Mia, show me the map Mia, [you] show me the map.
SUBJECTS IN EXCLAMATORY SENTENCES The subject often appears after the verb, or it may be understood. Example: What does he know! (He does know what. ) Fire! ([You watch out for the] fire!)
