Hard Questions about Genesis Is there a major
Hard Questions about Genesis Is there a major contradiction in the first two books of the bible?
Genesis Chapter 1 In Genesis Chapter 1 verses 1 through 31 & Chapter 2 verses 1 through 3 God Creates in the following order; 1 Heavens and Earth verse 1 n 2 Light verse 3 n 3 Night and Day verses 4, 5 n 4 Dry land verses 9, 10 n
Genesis Chapter 1 We need to look closely at verse 2 Genesis 1: 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Notice that the word “was” is highlighted. Remember that word! We will come back to this verse in a few minutes.
Genesis Chapter 1 Next God creates vegetation in Verses 11 and 12
Genesis Chapter 1 Then in verses 14 through 18 God creates the Sun Moon and Stars.
Genesis Chapter 1 Then in verses 14 through 18 God creates Sea Food
Genesis Chapter 1 In verses 24 and 25 God creates, all the land animals except man
Genesis Chapter 1 Finally In verses 26 and 27 God creates man, Male and Female
Genesis Chapter 1 In verses 28 through 31 God blesses mankind and gives them instruction.
Genesis Chapter 1 Verse 28 uses a very interesting word that has caused much discussion over the years; _________________ _ And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every
Genesis Chapter 1 This is the Hebrew word that was translated into replenish in Genesis 1: 28. It is the Hebrew word maw-lay', maw-law‘, It has no direct English translations, but the closest English can come to its meaning is; 1 To be full and complete. 2 To refill and complete.
Genesis Chapter 1 So in verses 28 through 31 we have a picture of God giving man instructions on completing the work that God had begun. Even more importantly this gives us our first glimpse of a fact that has been overlooked for thousands of years. There was something more.
Genesis Chapter 2 Verse 1; “Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. ” A couple more key words here; Finished, and more importantly Host is such a small word, but in a moment you will see it has great meaning.
Looking at the word FINISHED This is the Hebrew word that was translated into finished in Genesis 2: 1, It is the Hebrew word kaw-law‘. The most direct English translations of this word are 1 2 3 4 To end. To cease. To be finished. To accomplish.
Looking at the word HOST This is the Hebrew word that was translated into host in Genesis 1: 28 It is the Hebrew Compound Word, tsaw-baw‘ tseb-aw-aw‘. It has only one meaning in English, “A mass of people. ”
So the very first verse of chapter two of Genesis states that God has finished the Heavens and Earth and they were full of people ! Genesis 2: 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. In verses 2 and 3 of Chapter 2 God rested then blessed and sanctified the Sabbath; And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he
Genesis Chapter 2 Then we have an interesting statement in Genesis chapter 2 verses 4 and 5 4 5 These are the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens, And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.
Genesis Chapter 2 How can there not be a man to till the ground if he was just created in chapter 1? Quick review. Genesis chapter 1 verses 26 and 27 God creates man Chapter 2 verses 1 through 3 God finished and rested, Chapter 2 verse 1 says the world had a lot of people ( Remember The Word HOST, a mass of people. ) Chapter 2 verse 4 There is No Man!
Genesis Chapter 2 n Verse 7 gets more interesting; And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul. n Why would God form man now if he just created him in the last chapter?
Genesis Chapter 2 Verse 19 adds another twist, And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof. n n How can God Form the animals now If he already created them in Chapter 1 verses
Genesis Chapter 2 Then verses 21 through 23 add yet another fly to the ointment. And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam, and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh instead thereof; And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from man, made he a woman, and brought her unto the man. And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. n n Wait a minute Didn’t Chapter 1 verse 27 just say; So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis Chapter 4 Moving on down a little farther Genesis 4 details the births of the first two children Cain and Abel and eventually the murder of Abel by Cain. But then we have two other questions that pop up. n First Genesis Chapter 4 verses 13 through 15 And Cain said unto the LORD, My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me. And the LORD said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold. And the LORD set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him.
First Question If there were only three people on the Earth why was Cain worried that as he wandered everyone would want to kill him? Couldn’t he just head as far away from his mother and father as possible? And then the next two verses presents us with a question that has been asked time after time in every Sunday school room that ever existed.
Genesis Chapter 4 Verses 16 and 17; And Cain went out from the presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bare Enoch: and he builded a city, and called the name of the city, after the name of his son, Enoch. n
Who was Cain’s wife? In review there appears to be six major problems with Genesis chapters 1 , 2 , and 4.
Problem 1 l l Humans were created on the sixth day and told to multiply and replenish the earth and to have dominion over the whole earth, But. . . Adam and Eve were placed in the Garden of Eden. That was to be their home.
Problem 2 Genesis 1 verses 27 and 28 says that God created man and woman and told them to multiply, But. . . l In contrast, Genesis 2 verses 18 through 20 it says Adam was originally alone. It wasn't until after creating all the animals for Adam to see and name that God created Eve. l (BTW, it says he named them, not that he alone had dominion over them, or that he had dominion over them at all. Adam's world was a garden, he had no need for dominion over the world's animal population. )
Problem 3 l In Genesis chapter 1 verses 24 through 28 it clearly states that man was created after the animals. l However Genesis Chapter 2 verses 18 through 20 seem to be in direct contradiction. It clearly states that the Animals were formed after man.
Problems 4, 5 and 6 And then chapter 4 presents us with the three more unanswered questions; 1 2 3 Who was Cain afraid of? Who was his wife? How can you have a city, unless there is people to fill it.
Hard Questions? Hard questions that is… Unless… you realize You are reading about; Two groups of people. Two different times of creation. And. Two different places of creation.
Not a Point of Salvation! Before going any further let’s emphasize that belief in a single or dual creation history has no impact on Salvation comes through Jesus Christ John Chapter 14 Verse 6: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
Historical Perspective This is simply a historical perspective to better understand the word of God. The world looks at these hard questions and says; “See it’s just a old fairy-tail book, written thousands of years ago, and is full of contradictions. ”
Two Different Events? But the contradictions disappear when you realize that Genesis Chapter 1 and Chapter 2 are not a retelling of the same story but two different events. Yes, there is good evidence in the Bible that there were two different races of people in the pre-flood world and the combining of these races gave rise to civilization as we know it today.
Secrets The Bible is the word of God and has never been proven to be wrong in the smallest detail. What can be wrong is our understanding of the word of God didn’t tell us everything!
Secrets Deuteronomy Chapter 29 Verse 29 The secret things belong unto the LORD our God: but those things which are revealed belong unto us and to our children for ever, that we may do all the words of this law.
Secrets Job Chapter 15 verse 8 Hast thou heard the secret of God? and dost thou restrain wisdom to thyself?
Faith Often times when asked hard questions that they have no answer for Christians will often reply; “I don’t know I guess I will just have to take it on faith. ” There is nothing wrong with faith. But it is nice to have the answers when asked hard questions by unbelievers.
Answers The word of God contains tidbits of information that sometimes allows us to answer even the hardest questions. Daniel Chapter 2 Verse 47; The king answered unto Daniel, and said, Of a truth it is, that your God is a God of gods, and a Lord of kings, and a revealer of secrets, seeing thou couldest reveal this secret.
Answers Romans Chapter 16 Verse 25; Now to him that is of power to stablish you according to my gospel, and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery, which was kept secret since the world began,
Answers And Daniel tells us that more secrets shall be revealed near the end of time. Daniel Chapter 12 Verse 4; But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased
God has secrets, but God is also a revealer of secrets!
5 Points So let’s get right down to the nitty-gritty. There are 5 points that most people will disagree with at first glance. I will try show you using the Bible that our Preconceived notions about Genesis might not be as simple as we thought.
5 Points 1 There was a race of humans created before Adam. 2 This race of humans lived on this earth for a period of time before Adam was created. Maybe Thousands of years. 3 God, for what reason we don’t know decided to create the perfect man and put him in a perfect place; The garden of Eden. 4 Once Adam and Eve committed sin they were expelled from the garden and began living among this other group of people. 5 Adam and Eve’s descendants began to intermarry with these other people and that brings us to the events of the flood.
Clues God himself left us the clues. I will try to help you find them. I will try to show you the evidence in the Bible that just because we have always heard something told a certain way doesn’t mean it is true.
Clues We will start our journey of understanding with Jeremiah Chapter 4 Verses 23 through 27;
Clues I beheld the earth, and, lo, it was without form, and void; and the heavens, and they had no light. I beheld the mountains, and, lo, they trembled, and all the hills moved lightly. I beheld, and, lo, there was no man, and all the birds of the heavens were fled. I beheld, and, lo, the fruitful place was a wilderness, and all the cities thereof were broken down at the presence of the LORD, and by his fierce anger. For thus hath the LORD said, The whole land shall be desolate; yet will I not make a full end
Clues • This is God talking, and it is in past tense not a future tense, this is something that already happened.
Clues Job also makes two references to past ages or a former time; Job 8: 8 For enquire, I pray thee, of the former age, and prepare thyself to the search of their fathers: And Job continues Job 30: 3 For want and famine they were solitary; fleeing into the wilderness in former time desolate and waste.
Clues • Remember The Book of Job is well known as the oldest book in the bible, and since Job makes no references to Noah Abraham or Moses or any of the ancient patriarch’s, some people believe it very well could have been written before the flood.
Clues Isaiah Also gives us a couple of hints.
Clues • Isaiah 41: 22 Let them bring them forth, and shew us what shall happen: let them shew the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come.
Clues • Isaiah 46 verses 9 and 10; Remember the former things of old: for I am God, and there is none else; I am God, and there is none like me, Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure:
Clues And perhaps the most compelling statement in the whole Bible about a former world; Isaiah 65: 17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.
Clues And perhaps the most compelling statement in the whole Bible about a former world; Isaiah 65: 17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a This is not a FUTURE event! new earth: and the former shall not be The word create here is the same word remembered, nor come into mind. God used in Genesis 1: 1
Clues Gen 1: 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. This is the Hebrew word baw-raw‘ Isaiah 65: 17 For, behold, I create new In English It means Exactly what it says in heavens and a new earth: and the former Genesis 1: 1 Created. shall not be remembered, nor come into However of note is the fact that this hebrew mind. word is never used in the future-tense.
Clues • Isaiah 65: 17 For, behold, I create new former heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind. This is the Hebrew word ree-shone', ree-shone‘ It means former thing of old time past.
Cain’s Wife Many people believe I do not! Cain married his sister!
Cain’s Wife Most people say that "Cain's wife was his 'sister. '" Yet they completely ignore God's Law concerning this situation.
Cain’s Wife Leviticus 20: 17 Leviticus 18: 9 And if a man shall take his sister, his father's The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter, or his mother's daughter, and see daughter of thy father, or daughter of her nakedness, and she see his nakedness; it thy mother, whether she be born at is a wicked thing; and they shall be cut off in home, or born abroad, even their the sight of their people: he hath uncovered nakedness thou shalt not uncover his sister's nakedness; he shall bear his iniquity.
Cain’s Wife But You may say, “this law came later. ”
Cain’s Wife • It might have been written down later but how do you reconcile it with these verses? • Malachi 3: 6 For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. • Hebrews 13: 8 Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.
Cain’s Wife Others will say; "But Cain has already broken God's Law once, so why wouldn't he do so a second time? " and well he might; and there is ample evidence that he did sin time and time again, But now a second, third and even a fourth person must consent to his' breaking of God's Law.
Cain’s Wife His sister, his father (Adam) and his mother (Eve) must also consent to this violation of God's Law, not just Cain: Thus this answer is completely unacceptable.
Cain’s Wife What about Adam and Eve’s other Children?
Cain’s Wife Read your Bible closely Genesis 4: 25 And Adam knew his wife again; There is no indication that any of these and she bare a son, and called his other children were born until after the birth of Seth. name Seth: For God, said she, And Seth Was Cleary born to replace Abel. hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.
Cain’s Wife There is NO indication in the bible that Adam and Eve had other Children until AFTER the birth of Seth.
Cain’s Wife • Genesis 5: 3 And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth: • Genesis 5: 4 And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:
Evidence? A defense attorney might say; “All this is still only circumstantial evidence for people outside the garden”, but people have been given the death penalty with only circumstantial evidence many times. Let’s review what we have covered so far and see what kind of a case we can build.
Evidence? First we have 6 unanswered questions are impossible to reconcile with a single creation event. Second we have the use of verbiage in Genesis and Isaiah. Third we have Jeremiah, Isaiah and Job all three referencing a former world.
Evidence? Good pieces of evidence. Remember back at the beginning of the But as the old saying goes; Do you remember that word and verse? presentation I told you to remember a word in a We don’t have the smoking gun! verse and we would come back to it later? Or do we?
The Smoking Gun! Genesis 1: 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The Smoking Gun! Genesis 1: 2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God Such A simple little three letter word moved upon the face of the waters. but so full of importance
The Smoking Gun! was was This is the same word used No! twice in the same verse. Lets look at that verse again with the emphasis removed.
The Smoking Gun! Genesis Chapter 1 verse 2; And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Notice here that the first occurrence of the word “was” is not italicized but the second occurrence is, this is a very significant clue that points us at the answer and the Smoking Gun.
The Smoking Gun! Genesis Chapter 1 verse 2; And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. Two different versions of the word was. Some of you know what the significance of words printed in italics means in the King James Version.
The Smoking Gun! For those of you who don’t know the meaning of italics in the King James Bible. Italicized words in the King James Bible are words that do not exist in the original text, they were added by the translators for clarity.
The Smoking Gun! But the added word is not what we are interested in. was “And the earth was without form, and void; ” This is the part of the verse holds one of the greatest secrets of the Bible In fact, this one word is the key
The Smoking Gun! This is the Hebrew Word haw-yaw‘ was It has a very different meaning than you would suppose when you read the English word that was used when translated.
The Smoking Gun! was This is the Hebrew Word haw-yaw‘ Direct English Translation; Become Always with Emphasis.
The Smoking Gun! Genesis 1: 1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. become
Conclusion I believe there were other people on the Earth besides Adam and Eve. If that was the case then all the hard questions about Genesis disappear.
