Most people can think of a place in nature that provides them with a sense of peace and tranquility. For former American President, Jimmy Carter, and his wife that place is The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. Jimmy is making the argument that this natural gem needs to be preserved and cherished rather than destroyed for economic reasons. To build his argument, Jimmy begins with powerful anecdotes as effective evidence, uses logical appeals, and vivid, emotion-evoking language. President Carter purposely begins his argument with anecdotes as effective evidence. These meaningful memories help the read to understand how personally important this topic is to him. For example, in paragraph two he states, “During bright July days, we walked long ancient caribou trails and studied the brilliant mosaic of wildflowers, mosses, and lichens that hugged the tundra. ” Sharing the details of this trip with his wife helps the reader to better understand what a huge loss this would be not only to Jimmy Carter and his wife, but to the millions of Americans who have never had this opportunity. This anecdote also makes Jimmy Carter feel more like an everyday person who takes a vacation with his wife, making him more convincing to the reader who typically only thinks of him as an American President. He continues to share his personal interactions with this natural beauty, even calling it “America’s Serengeti” for two paragraphs to enforce just how much beauty he has personally experience at The Artic National Refuge. Jimmy Carter continues to build his argument with the use of logical appeals. In paragraph 5, he explains using Dwight D Eisenhower as an example, that historically both democrats and republicans have passed laws to preserve natural beauty. The purpose of this is so the reader realizes that this is an issue that both parties within our government align with- of course then, you should too right? He goes on to include the fact that, “At best, the Arctic Refuge might provide 1 to 2 percent of the oil our country consumes each day. ” The inclusion of this statistic helps the reader to understand that even if there is oil under this space, it is not enough to logically make it worth destroying. Clearly, there is more value in its natural beauty than in its oil making it a poor decision to destroy for economic reasons. Finally, Jimmy Carter uses diction that evokes emotion from his reader. For example, in paragraph 9 he refers to this land as a “gift we could pass on to future generations. ” At this point, the reader would feel bad robbing future generations of this natural gift. By calling this land a gift, it makes the reader feel a moral obligation to take care of and pass on this present. Furthermore, in paragraph four he discusses if “this great wilderness was consumed by a web of roads. ” The word consumed gives the feeling of chewing and spitting out, again making the reader feel too guilty to consider the economic gains. Jimmy Carter effectively built an argument to preserve natural resources by using personal anecdotes, logical evidence,
