Halloween is a holiday celebrated on October 31 st n It is celebrated in the most of the English speaking western world, and Halloween has gained popularity in the Western Europe in recent times.

The origin of Halloween n Halloween started 300 years before Christ, but it had a different name: Samain "festival of death”. The priests went from house to house and asking God for his gifts. In case of refusal, they put the house into the curse of death. Nowadays we know it like expression “Trick or Treat "(curse or a gift). Clearly said: if not present, then a curse.

What do people do on Halloween? n Children dress up the scary costumes such as vampires, werewolfs, ghosts, skeletons etc. Children are happy in the costumes. n The people usually go to the parties or watch the horror films at home or at a cinema.

Trick or Treat n On October 31 st, children dressed in the scary costumes go from house to house with a traditional saying „Trick or Treat“ in hope of getting some sweets and candy („Koledu, nebo vám něco provedu“).

Symbols of Halloween There are many Halloween symbols. n animals: black cats, bats, spiders n figures: ghosts, skeletons, witches and wizards, Dracula n colours: green, orange, grey and black n others: pumpkins, graveyards, gravestones, cobwebs, haunted houses People decorate their houses and the parties with these symbols.

Halloween in Czech Republic n Although some households give a Jack-o'- lantern in front of their house in symbolic way, these households are not ready for trick-or-treating.

Making Pumpkin soup n n n n n 4 tbsp olive oil 2 onions , finely chopped 1 kg pumpkins or squash (try kabocha), peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks 1 kg pumpkins or squash (try 700 ml vegetable stock or chicken stock 142 ml pot double cream 4 slices wholemeal seeded bread handful pumpkin seed from a packet Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large saucepan, then gently cook 2 finely chopped onions for 5 mins, until soft but not coloured. Add 1 kg peeled, deseeded and chopped pumpkin or squash to the pan, then carry on cooking for 8 -10 min, stirring occasionally until it starts to soften and turn golden. Pour 700 ml vegetable stock into the pan, then season with salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, then simmer for 10 mins until the squash is very soft. Pour the 142 ml pot of double cream into the pan, bring back to the boil, then purée with a hand blender. For an extra-velvety consistency you can now push the soup through a fine sieve into another pan. The soup can now be frozen for up to 2 months. While the soup is cooking, slice the crusts from 4 slices of wholemeal seed bread, then cut the bread into small croutons. Heat the remaining 2 tbsp olive oil in a frying pan, then fry the bread until it starts to become crisp. Add a handful of pumpkin seeds to the pan, then cook for a few mins more until they are toasted. These can be made a day ahead and stored in an airtight container. Reheat the soup if needed, taste for seasoning, then serve scattered with croutons and seeds and drizzled with more olive oil, if you want.
