Happiness and the Good life Happiness and the good life. Three robes is Enough Although the majority of this concept is thought to be attributed to monks, the idea at its core can be applied to everyday life. The concept of having what you need, and focusing on having those needs met but not to excess is a good wholesome way to live. It doesn’t mean that you can’t strive to have better in your life, you just make sure to put your priorities in the right place. Along with this, it doesn’t say that you can’t have some of the things you want as well, just keep it in moderation. Don’t let the things that you own, own you. For example, I try to live my life by this basic idea. I have all of the things that I need for life: food, shelter, and some of the conveniences for day to day living. I try not to focus solely on what I have, but more what it can do for me and how I can help others in their lives. I try to live a simplistic life, focusing more on improving myself than just gathering material items. I’ve never been one to turn down a friend in need if I can help it, and I’ll go out of my way to help people I meet because I enjoy the act of helping others. This was part of the reason I joined the military; I wanted to do something I thought was important to serve my country, and to keep my family members and friends safe at home. I also enjoy my car, which most people would say is extravagant, but to me it serves more than one purpose. It is fun to drive and for me to work on, as it’s one of my hobbies. To me it’s a form of art, which is good for the soul to have things that you enjoy, but it still serves a purpose. It is still a useful tool. I use it as a tool, it’s not just something that I keep strictly as art. To me, if it doesn’t do something useful it’s not worth having.

One of my many projects. I reconditioned this trail bike for my uncle. It was his fathers, and it had been sitting for years being neglected. It made me feel good to accomplish something that I’m good at while doing something nice for someone.

Living simple is a must for when you are on deployment. You take the greatest pleasures from the littlest things; a hot shower, a package from home, clean socks and a warm meal.

Although to some it would seem extravagant, this is one of my simple pleasures. Whether it’s driving it, washing it to get ready for a meet, or working on it to make it better, I find a lot of joy in being able to have something I’ve worked hard for.
